IRS Direct File is now open to file returns in 25 states.

IRS Direct File is now open in 25 participating states


IRS Direct File is now open 24/7 to prepare and file federal tax returns online – for free – directly with the IRS.

It's always free, easy to use, accurate and secure.

IRS Direct File expands to 25 participating states with additional features making it an option for more people in 2025.

During the pilot last year, Direct File was available in Arizona, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington State and Wyoming. Joining the 12 pilot states for the 2025 tax filing season where Direct File will also be available are Alaska, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

IRS Direct File supports more tax situations in 2025 


In addition to more than doubling the number of states where it's now available, Direct File covers more tax situations in 2025.

The Direct File pilot supported taxpayers claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit and Credit for Other Dependents. For the 2025 filing season, Direct File will also support taxpayers claiming the Child and Dependent Care Credit, Premium Tax Credit, Credit for the Elderly and the Disabled, and Retirement Savings Contribution Credits.

In addition to covering taxpayers claiming the standard deduction and deductions for student loan interest and educator expenses, Direct File will also support taxpayers claiming deductions for Health Savings Accounts in 2025.
