IRS makes Direct File a permanent option to file federal tax returns

Following a successful filing season pilot and feedback from a variety of partners, the Internal Revenue Service announced that it will make Direct File a permanent option for filing federal tax returns starting in the 2025 tax season.

The agency is exploring ways to expand Direct File to make more taxpayers eligible in the 2025 filing season and beyond by examining options to broaden Direct File's availability across the nation, including covering more tax situations and inviting all states to partner with Direct File next year.

The IRS plans to announce additional details on the 2025 expansion in the coming months.

IRS Direct File Pilot Program: Filing Season 2024 After Action Report

Two weeks after closing the Direct File pilot, the IRS released Publication 5969, IRS Direct File Pilot Program: Filing Season 2024 After Action Report. The report examines the pilot itself, the technology and taxpayer experience, Direct File's innovative customer support system, integration with state tax systems, and the cost and benefits of the pilot.

Throughout this filing season, we saw strong interest in Direct File from taxpayers throughout the country. Millions of people - including many from outside the 12 pilot states - visited the Direct File website to learn about the new system.

More than 3.3 million taxpayers started the Eligibility Checker to check if they could use Direct File, 423,450 logged into Direct File, and 140,803 taxpayers submitted accepted returns.

Direct File issued more than $90 million in tax refunds and collected $35 million in tax balances due.
