1. You may be able to save money with education tax credits If you’re paying education costs for yourself, a spouse or a dependent, you may be eligible to save some money with education tax credits. When preparing your federal tax return, you have the option of either taking the standard deduction, or, if you think you may have more qualified expenses than the standard deduction provides, you may choose to itemize.
