HRSA Announces Tom Engels’ Return as Administrator. Mr. Engels previously led HRSA from 2019 to 2021 and brings a wealth of experience, including his work on the White House’s COVID-19 task force and implementing the Provider Relief Fund. He returns to HRSA from his recent role as Sergeant at Arms at the Wisconsin Senate.
Drug Overdose Deaths Fall. Data from the National Center for Health Statistics show that the age-adjusted rate of drug overdose deaths in the United States decreased by 4.0 percent from 2022 to 2023. The report includes a table with state-by-state numbers for overdose deaths for any opioid, synthetic opioids other than methadone, psychostimulants with abuse potential, and cocaine. HRSA’s Federal Office of Rural Health Policy funds a variety of grant programs each year through the Rural Communities Opioid Response Program, including three Rural Centers of Excellence focused on rural-specific prevention, treatment, and recovery. Funding and Opportunities
HRSA Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (RWHAP) Part C – Capacity Development Program – March 18. HRSA’s HIV/AIDS Bureau expects to award 60 grants to eligible applicants that include Rural Health Clinics, Indian Health Service facilities, and community-based organizations that provide early intervention services to people with HIV. This Part C funding aims to strengthen organizational capacity to respond to the changing health care landscape and increase access to high-quality HIV primary health care services for low-income and underserved people. HRSA intends funding under this program to support one short-term activity that can be completed by the end of the one-year period of performance.

Learning Events and Technical Assistance
HRSA Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training Program for Paraprofessionals – Get Application Help – Friday, February 28 at 2:00 pm Eastern. HRSA’s Bureau of Health Workforce (BHW) will award approximately $10.9 million to up to 29 awardees in this program to enhance community-based training for students preparing to become mental health workers, peer support specialists, and other behavioral health paraprofessionals. During this 90-minute session, BHW will provide assistance to applicants, including: public and private institutions of higher learning; nonprofit organizations; hospitals, health centers, and Rural Health Clinics; and State, local, and Tribal governments.
