September 14, 2023
On Tuesday, September 12, CDC recommended that everyone 6 months and older receive either of the following updated COVID-19 vaccinations:
- Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine (2023-2024 Formula)
- Moderna COVID-19 vaccine (2023-2024 Formula)
See the CDC press release. CDC will update online information this week.
This recommendation follows FDA's authorization of these products on Monday, September 11.
FDA’s authorization simultaneously rescinded the authorization for bivalent vaccines, specifically in this statement: “As part of today’s actions, the bivalent Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines are no longer authorized for use in the United States.”
To minimize the risk of vaccine administration errors, providers should:
- Remove all bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines from storage units immediately, even if they are not expired.
- Dispose of all bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine vials in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Report all disposed inventory as wastage. Health Center COVID-19 Vaccine Program participants, see relevant guidance below.
Remove Bivalent mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines from Your Inventory
The table below provides a listing of COVID-19 bivalent vaccines that you should remove from your inventory. For additional information, see CDC's Immunization Information Systems COVID-19 Vaccine Related Codes.

Accept and Dispose of Shipped Bivalent mRNA COVID-19 Vaccine
While new shipments of bivalent vaccines have been halted, you may still receive shipments that were en route at the time of the FDA’s recent action. If a new shipment of bivalent vaccines arrives, do not refuse the shipment. Simply accept and then dispose of the vaccines.
Discard diluent sent with bivalent vaccine orders. Do not save diluent for use with any other product.
Health Center COVID-19 Vaccine Program Participants
Health centers that ordered vaccines through the Health Center COVID-19 Vaccine Program must update stock on hand and wastage in the Health Partner Order Portal (HPoP).
The following HPoP inventory and wastage resources are available in the Health Center Program Community (HCP Community):
Upcoming COCA Call on Respiratory Viruses
CDC’s press release also reminded readers of the availability of vaccines for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and flu. Their Clinician Outreach and Communication Activity (COCA) group will hold a call next week about the vaccination of older adults against various respiratory viruses.
