DUE AT NOON ET: Have You Shared Your Health Center’s Readiness for Vaccinating Children Under 5?
Noon ET TODAY is the deadline for sharing your health center’s readiness for vaccinating children under 5 if a vaccine is authorized by FDA and recommended by CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.

Last Thursday, we sent an email to the Project Director identified in HRSA’s Electronic Handbooks (EHBs). This email came from BPHCAnswers@hrsa.gov and had subject line, “Your Health Center’s Plans: Vaccination Readiness for Children Under 5.” We invited a single representative for your health center to complete the request. Please do not reply to the email—use the link to share your input.

See our February 3 bulletin for more information.

Later this week, we will post a request for information in the Health Center COVID-19 Online Community. We’d like a single representative for your health center to share:

  1. Your interest in receiving point-of-care testing supplies for use at your health center should these supplies become available through HRSA.

  2. Your interest in receiving a limited supply of oral antiviral drugs to treat eligible patients who test positive for COVID-19.

Once the information is available in the online community, we’ll also publish a BPHC Bulletin containing a preview of the questions.

Climate Change

Climate Change and Health: The Risks to Community Health and Health Care Utilization
Climate change influences human health and diseases in numerous ways, and underserved communities stand to bear the brunt of these climate-induced risks (e.g., extreme heat, poor air quality, flooding, extreme weather events). HRSA and CDC’s Climate and Health Program invite you to consider the impacts of climate change on the U.S. health care system. CDC will share its work to build resilience to these public health effects.

Tune in to HRSA at the National Association of Community Health Center’s Conference
If you will attend the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC) Policy & Issues Forum (February 14-16), we encourage you to join the sessions featuring HRSA speakers. Carole Johnson, HRSA’s new administrator, will speak at the conference, as will HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra. Senior leaders from the Bureau of Primary Health Care will also present. See the full conference schedule. NACHC is a HRSA-funded National Training and Technical Assistance Partner (NTTAP).

P4 Challenge

Winners Announced in the Promoting Pediatric Primary Intervention (P4) Challenge
HRSA’s Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) recently announced 20 final winners in the Promoting Pediatric Primary Prevention (P4) Challenge competition. Five HRSA-funded health centers were among the winners. Find out which winning teams received $25,000 each.

This competition recognized innovation, collaboration, and service in communities throughout our nation, spurring new approaches to connect families to well-child visits and immunizations through primary care.

COVID-19

Action Checklist for COVID-19 Vaccinations for Children Ages 6 Months-4 Years
HRSA created this Action Checklist for Children Ages 6 Months-4 Years for health centers. It contains helpful information and tips for pediatric COVID-19 vaccination, including resources, readiness reminders, guidance on vaccine supply and administration, and more.

If a vaccine is authorized by FDA and recommended by CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the vaccine will be administered in accordance with related requirements and recommendations.

Efforts to Distribute Critical COVID-19 Resources
We’ve recently built on the success of the HRSA Health Center COVID-19 Vaccine Program, adding programs that ensure equitable access to tools that can mitigate the spread and impact of COVID-19. These programs will increase access to COVID-19 testing supplies, therapeutics, and N95 masks:

HRSA Health Center COVID-19 Therapeutics Program Office Hours Recording
We invited all health centers to last week’s Therapeutics Program office hours. If you missed it, watch the recording. We covered the latest program information and a program participant shared best practices. The program is currently fully enrolled. HRSA hopes to expand to additional health centers and look-alikes as supply increases.

FDA Approves Second COVID-19 Vaccine
The vaccine, which has been known as the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, will now be marketed as Spikevax, for the prevention of COVID-19 disease in individuals 18 years of age and older. Read the press release. The Moderna vaccine has been available under emergency use authorization (EUA) for individuals 18 years of age and older since December 2020.

The FDA reviewed updated data from the clinical trial which supported the EUA and included a longer duration of follow-up in a larger clinical trial population. More resources:

Health Centered On

Health centers across the nation have distinguished themselves in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Here’s a recent example:

Keystone Health Center.jpg

Ensuring Access to At-Home Self-Tests for Migratory and Seasonal Agricultural Workers in Rural Pennsylvania
In January, Keystone Rural Health Center (Chambersburg, PA) received 16,200 COVID-19 at-home self-tests through the HRSA COVID-19 Testing Supply Program. One of the health center’s main focuses is providing health care to migratory and seasonal agricultural workers (MSAWs) in Franklin County. HRSA identified the Keystone Agricultural Worker Program as a primary recipient of these at-home self-tests.

Through this collaboration, tests were primarily distributed to MSAWs staffing fruit-packing facilities. These facilities are highly vulnerable to COVID-19 outbreaks, particularly during the winter, making the availability of tests especially important.

Keystone also distributed tests to local groups serving individuals experiencing homelessness, including the Franklin County Homeless Shelter and House of Hope. On Saturday, January 29, the health center held a drive-thru giveaway event, at which they distributed 3,200 tests to more than 800 cars.

“The HRSA COVID-19 Testing Supply Program has allowed for early diagnosis and reduced spread of COVID-19,” said Monica Diehl, Keystone’s senior nursing officer. “As a result, children were able to stay in the classroom, employees were able to stay at work, and agricultural workers were able to continue feeding our country, all thanks to this HRSA program.”

What's Your Story

Share Your Story
For health centers participating in the HRSA COVID-19 Testing Supply Program and/or in the HRSA COVID-19 N95 Mask Program, we’re eager to hear how your health center is distributing tests and/or N95 masks. We’d like to know how your participation has positively impacted your patients and recipients.

Send your story to our Health Center Stories inbox. If sharing a photo, please include a high-resolution image along with the names of everyone in the picture and make sure each person has signed a HRSA Photo Release Form.

National Donor Day: Monday, February 14

National Donor Day

Every year on National Donor Day, we spread awareness about the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donation and recognize the selfless gifts of past donors. More than 100,000+ children, women, and men are on the national transplant waiting list. By registering to donate, health center patients can potentially save up to eight lives and enhance 75 more. Encourage patients to sign up at organdonor.gov and donaciondeorganos.gov.

American Heart Month

American Heart Month

Self-Measured Blood Pressure Monitoring to Improve Heart Health
According to the CDC, nearly 50% of adults have high blood pressure and only about 25% of that group have their condition under control. Self-measured blood pressure (SMBP) monitoring can help health centers improve patients’ blood pressure control. Learn more by checking out these resources from NACHC.

  • Choosing a Home Blood Pressure Monitor at-a-glance comparison tool: The devices it reviews include all home use arm-cuff monitors on the Validated Device Listing and those with an active application as of Wednesday, January 5. Based on health center feedback, NACHC added a “Notes” page providing context and information to help users understand and compare available features.

  • The Million Hearts® SMBP Forum convenes SMBP implementers, facilitators, and other SMBP supporters to exchange knowledge, identify obstacles, and surface solutions to advance the practice of SMBP nationwide. This quarterly forum is co-hosted by CDC and NACHC (using CDC funding). We encourage health centers to join the next meeting:

Workforce

HRSA-funded NTTAPs present learning collaboratives:

  • Supporting Mental Health Needs of MSAWs
Participants will focus on the current and future landscape of mental health among MSAWs, as well as recommendations for how best to support this community. This opportunity from MHP Salud is designed for health center staff, community health workers, and other enabling service staff who interact with the MSAW community. Register by Friday, February 18.

  • Using Legal Services as Part of a Community Health Strategy to Improve Maternal and Child Health

Participants will develop strategies and plans for integrating civil legal services into their health center’s maternal and child health priorities. Register here.

  • Gender, Homelessness, and Interpersonal Violence: Building Equitable Systems to Support Survivors and Providers
Health Partners on IPV + Exploitation and The National Health Care for the Homeless Council (NHCHC) invite health center staff interested in learning to support underserved populations at the intersection of gender and homelessness through community partnerships. Participants will engage with national experts and connect with other providers across the country. Content and discussions will include both clinical and non-clinical perspectives, so multidisciplinary teams from health centers should apply together if possible. Apply by Friday, February 11.

  • The Health Center Resource Clearinghouse: Developing Strategies for Engaging Learners
NACHC invites training and development managers and staff from health centers and Primary Care Associations (PCAs) to join. You will collaborate to strengthen the Clearinghouse’s efforts to build out more structured ways to learn. The focus will be on bundling resources, refining promising practices, introducing micro-learning, and improving ways for health centers to participate in learning collaboratives. Apply to participate.

Additional Resources

Resources on Housing Insecurity
NHCHC produced resources to support health centers of all funding types in serving people experiencing housing insecurity.

Filling the HCH Gap: Case Studies of Non-HCH Health Centers Serving People Experiencing Homelessness profiles five non-HCH health centers who provide services to people without homes through a range of services.
