March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 21 for men and 1 in 23 for women for developing CRC. According to the UDS, health centers provided more than two million patients with recommended colorectal cancer screenings in 2016. Research links early diagnosis of CRC through screening with improved prognosis.
Addressing health disparities is critical—especially around preventive screenings and diagnosis. The percentage of African-American (54.7%) and Hispanic (55.4%) patients who reported receiving a colonoscopy in HRSA’s 2014 Health Center Patient Survey is below the national average of 60.3% (CDC’s National Health Interview Survey, 2015). Health centers also serve a high proportion of uninsured patients, who have lower rates of CRC screening.
Among the 7,002 participants in HRSA’s 2014 survey, of the patients at least 50 years of age:
- 38.1% of uninsured health center patients reported receiving a colonoscopy, compared to 24% of the nation’s uninsured patients (American Cancer Society’s Cancer Prevention & Early Detection Facts and Figure Report, 2017-2018).
- 56.9% of all health center patients living below 100% of the poverty line reported receiving a colonoscopy, compared to 42.8% nationally (CDC’s National Health Interview Survey, 2015).
