Health care providers with student loans practicing in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and other U.S. territories are encouraged to learn more about the NEW FY17 National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Loan Repayment Program Zika Response and Preparedness Act Application.
As of November 20, 2016, more than 33,250 Zika cases were diagnosed in U.S. territories, with more cases being reported daily. This new loan repayment program provides support to health care providers at NHSC-approved sites and Regional Pediatric Centers, as they work to address the health effects and risks associated with Zika.
Eligible clinicians will receive up to $70,000 in loan repayment for full-time service and up to $35,000 for a half-time service (in addition to your current salary) for three years of service at an NHSC-approved site.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Be a U.S. citizen (either U.S. born or naturalized) or U.S. National;
- Be eligible for, or hold, an appointment as a commissioned officer in the Regular Corps of the Public Health Service or be eligible for selection for civilian service in the NHSC;
- Participate or be eligible to participate as a provider in the Medicare, Medicaid, and Children’s Health Insurance Programs, as appropriate;
- Have a current, full, permanent, unencumbered, unrestricted health professional license, certificate or registration issued by the territory in which the applicant will work and in the discipline in which he/she is applying to serve by July 18, 2017.
- Employed or newly hired eligible clinicians (see discipline list below) at NHSC-approved sites in Puerto Rico and other U.S. Territory affected by the Zika virus
