Q&A

Q: Are the LED downlight lamps Buy American Act (BAA) compliant?

A: There are no downlight LED lamps made in the USA currently. There is a BAA waiver if there are no products manufactured in the US. GPG is working to achieve a nationwide waiver for this technology.

Q: Are there ballast-compatibility issues?

A: The lamps are not compatible with magnetic ballasts, and if lamps and ballasts are not compatible there can be flicker issues. There is now a universal mount bypass option but it is not eligible for DLC approval. One lesson learned in Fort Worth was to cool down ballasts for 10-15 minutes before replacing the LED lamp to avoid lamp failure.

Q: What is the cost of the LED Lamp?

A: Lamp prices are currently about $10. At the time of the study in 2015, the lamp was $22. Annual savings were calculated at $6.37, based on an average utility rate of $0.11/kWh.
