DOD REPI Program Joins DOI to Invest $15 Million to Enhance Recreation Opportunities Around Military Installations
The Department of Defense (DOD) Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration (REPI) Program is pleased to join the Department of the Interior to announce the 2024 Readiness and Recreation Initiative funding recipients. Through the 2024 Readiness and Recreation Initiative, DOD and DOI will invest $15 million in projects supporting military installation resilience, conservation, and recreational access around military bases in Florida (Naval Station Mayport), Indiana (Naval Support Activity Crane), Minnesota (Camp Ripley Military Training Center), North Carolina (Fort Liberty), and Virginia (Naval Weapons Station Yorktown).
Through the Readiness and Recreation Initiative, DOI's National Park Service provides funding from unobligated Land and Water Conservation Fund balances as a match to REPI Program funding to safeguard natural areas, protect water resources, preserve cultural heritage sites, and provide recreation opportunities for the public while preserving military mission.
“The Department is committed to the health and well-being of our Service Members and the defense communities they live in," said Assistant Secretary of Defense for Energy, Installation and Environment Brenden Owens. "By partnering with the National Park Service through the Readiness & Recreation Initiative, we honor this commitment by funding the protection of new parks and the development of public outdoor recreation infrastructure that our military families can enjoy for generations to come."
This investment improves access to outdoor recreation for millions of Americans living by military bases.
