Your Voice Matters!

Megaphone

The Sentinel Team is now collecting feedback.  We want to hear from you, particularly about what you like about Sentinel and suggestions for improvement.  If you are interested, please email us at sentinel@ftc.gov for more information.  Also, if you haven’t yet done our one-minute survey, we’d really appreciate if you did so.

Also, we are adding Amendments to the Confidentiality and Data Security Agreement to cover new developments.  The Amendments will appear at a future point when you log onto Sentinel; it will update the terms and conditions of Sentinel use.

Sentinel Success Story

Sentinel complaints were important in a recent federal prosecution of a New York man in the Eastern District of New York.  The defendant pleaded guilty to money laundering to facilitate and profit from the introduction of fraudulent robocall traffic into the United States.  U.S. consumers, including several elderly ones, were defrauded as a result of these scams.

Did You Know?

You can choose two work phone numbers—a primary and secondary--by which we can call you when you log onto Sentinel.  Some users prefer to have their work mobile phone numbers as the primary one.  If you want to change your current arrangement, simply contact customersupport@consumersentinel.gov.

For the first three-quarters of 2022, the Sentinel Team completed 27 outreach events for over 300 people.  The next training session is October 6th at noon EST via Microsoft Teams (email sentinel@ftc.gov for details).  There will also be future sessions every month.  Just have a quick question on using Sentinel?  Email customersupport@consumersentinel.gov for help.

Finding a CLU

CLU

Law enforcement partnerships are a major part of the FTC’s work, but we still like to take a moment to acknowledge the exemplary efforts of prosecutors committed to consumer protection.  That’s why the FTC’s Criminal Liaison Unit (CLU) was proud to present its Prosecuting Attorney’s Award to Katherine Kopita in an August ceremony in Albany, New York.  Ms. Kopita prosecuted criminals who ripped off more than 1,300 small businesses, medical providers, and schools by illegally billing them for bogus online directory listings.

Since it was established in 2003, the FTC’s CLU has contributed to the successful prosecution of more than 1,000 criminal defendants – fraudulent telemarketers, phantom debt collectors, immigration scammers, and others who prey on consumers. Watch this video to learn more about the work of CLU.

Digital Dark Patterns

The FTC recently released a report showing how companies are increasingly using sophisticated design practices known as “dark patterns” that can trick or manipulate consumers into buying products or services or giving up their privacy.  The Report goes beyond discussing the problem, making practical recommendations for companies as they develop, design, and improve their online interfaces.

State of Play

What marketing techniques do kids, including teens, encounter in the various digital spaces they frequent?  And what do we know about their cognitive abilities at different ages and developmental stages to recognize and understand advertising content?  Those are just some of the discussion topics at the FTC’s October 19, 2022, virtual eventProtecting Kids from Stealth Advertising in Digital Media.
