FDPIR Administrative Funds for Nutrition Education Are Still Available!

FNS has distributed over $3.6 million in FDPIR Nutrition Education funds to nearly 70 FDPIR administering Indian Tribal Organizations (ITOs) to provide nutrition education to FDPIR participants. ITOs can request additional funds until the $4 million available for FY 2024 has been distributed. ITOs that have already received funds are using them for a variety of nutrition education activities, such as hiring nutrition education staff, developing print and audiovisual materials, and leading cooking demonstrations to show participants how to prepare meals that use both the FDPIR food package and traditional foods sourced outside of the program. Need additional nutrition education funds? Contact your FNS Regional Office today!

FDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition Invites Tribes to Follow-Up Call Regarding Nutrition Initiatives On February 9, 2024

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) invites federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native Tribes to participate in an all-Tribes call with the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) to learn about FDA’s nutrition initiatives. FDA is prioritizing its nutrition initiatives to ensure people in the United States have greater access to healthier foods and nutrition information we can all use to identify healthier choices more easily.

CFSAN will host the all-Tribes call as a follow-up to their October 24, 2023, meeting that provided an overview of its nutrition initiatives and collected feedback, including tribes’ experiences with food labels, accessing healthy foods, and using nutrition information. Learn more about the follow-up call here. FDA will hold the call on February 9, 2024, 1:00-2:00pm ET. To participate, register by clicking on the provided link:

Tribal Leaders Consultation Work Group Updates

In December, USDA consulting officials and staff joined Tribal leaders and representatives in Las Vegas, NV, to consult on FDPIR and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The meeting, held both in-person and virtually, brought together attendees to consult on specific issues surrounding self-determination, ongoing program studies, proposed rulemaking, information technology systems that support food distribution programs, and SNAP-Ed, among other important topics.
