Raise Awareness of Sudden Infant Death and Promote Safe Sleep

Visit the WIC Works Resource System’s Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Awareness Month observance page where you’ll find links to a number of resources, such as:

Outreach material tailored for specific communities including African American, American Indian/Alaska Native and Spanish-speaking communities
Materials for health providers including a continuing education (CE) activity for nurses and Safe Sleep videos
A link to the Consumer Product Safety Commission to help ensure families are using a safety-approved crib or bassinet

These resources, some of which are in Spanish, serve to help raise awareness of sudden infant death and to promote safe sleep for babies.

Learn About and Educate WIC Participants on Oral Health

National Dental Hygiene Month serves as a great opportunity to emphasize the importance of good oral hygiene. A number of resources (some available in Spanish) are available for WIC staff to learn about and educate WIC participants on oral health, including:

Information and a video about the causes and prevention of baby bottle tooth decay
A How to Care for your Child's Teeth page that offers information about teething, thumb sucking and pacifier use
The CDC's Children's Oral Health page includes a Dentist Locator
The Indian Health Service's National Dental Hygiene Month observance page has a link to an IHS dental clinic locator
