Judges select attorney Roger Sharpe as new Clerk of Court

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (January 13, 2020): Chief Judge Jane E. Magnus-Stinson announced today that the judges of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana have selected Roger A. G. Sharpe to serve as Clerk of Court, effective May 10, 2020. Mr. Sharpe will fill the vacancy created by the impending retirement of current Clerk Laura A. Briggs.

 

Chief Judge Stinson remarked, “Roger attended law school with a career in public service as his goal - and the Clerk position fulfills that goal. The Court is confident that his dedication to our mission and to the success of our Judges and staff, his commitment to excellence on matters large and small, and his principled way of demonstrating kindness and compassion towards all people - colleagues and those outside the Court - will serve him and the Court well.”

 

Mr. Sharpe currently serves as the Court’s death penalty law clerk. He joined the Southern District of Indiana in September 2013 and has previously served the Court as attorney to the clerk, staff attorney, and law clerk to Chief Judge Stinson. Before coming to the Southern District of Indiana, Mr. Sharpe served as a law clerk to the Hon. Sidney Fitzwater of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas from August 2011-August 2012, followed by a year-long clerkship with the Hon. Jerome Holmes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit in Oklahoma City.

 

As Clerk of Court, Mr. Sharpe will report directly to Chief Judge Stinson and the other judges of the Southern District. The Clerk leads an office of some 75 employees who provide a wide variety of services to members of the court community and the public at large. Mr. Sharpe’s responsibilities will encompass a multitude of legal and administrative duties, including managing the Court’s budget, information technology, space and facilities, and the staff responsible for docketing and processing civil and criminal cases, jury services, and courtroom operations. 

 

On learning of his appointment, Mr. Sharpe remarked, “I am honored to have been selected as the Southern District of Indiana’s next Clerk. I will do my very best to fill the extraordinarily large shoes that Laura Briggs is leaving behind and look forward to serving the Judges, staff, and public in my new role.”

Born and raised in Springfield, Illinois, Mr. Sharpe is a graduate of Rice University, with a B.A. in Religious Studies, cum laude. He received his Juris Doctorate, with honors, from the University of Chicago Law School. He and his family live in Indianapolis.
