Anaerobic and Aerobic Bacteria Detected in Commercial Tattoo and Permanent Makeup Inks
FDA researchers investigated the presence of anaerobic and aerobic bacteria in commercial tattoo and permanent makeup (PMU) inks. The findings demonstrated that nearly half of the PMU ink samples and close to one-quarter of the tattoo ink samples tested contained bacterial contamination, even if the products were labeled “sterile.” The specific focus on anaerobic bacteria adds a new dimension to understanding microbial risks associated with tattoo and PMU inks.
