EPA Hosts Webinar on Safe Collection, Storage, and Transport of Small-Format Batteries
Please join us on May 14 for a virtual meeting that seeks input from states, Tribes, municipal governments, and industry representatives on current practices for safe collection, storage, and transport of small format batteries prior to recycling. This session focuses on how communities and businesses are currently working to:
- Inform the public on how to prepare used batteries for collection.
- Ensure safe collection and storage at drop-off locations or consolidation points (including training of staff).
- Package and ship used batteries to minimize potential safety issues.
Anyone involved in the collection and recycling of small format batteries is welcome to participate.
The meeting will begin with a few brief presentations by communities and businesses across the country. Afterwards, participants will be invited to provide their own experiences and lessons learned to inform the development of EPA resources that summarize best practices for collecting batteries for recycling.

United Nations Releases New Food Waste Index Report 2024
The U.N. Environment Programme released the Food Waste Index Report 2024, which includes robust national and global estimates of food waste based on expanded data points. The report also provides guidance on food waste measurement and explores solutions for food waste reduction. Download key messages and the full report.

EPA is making available $4.6 billion across two implementation grant competitions, one general competition (deadline passed), and one specifically for Tribes and territories. Reminder - Apply for EPA’s Environmental and Climate Justice Community Change Grants Program
EPA’s Office of Environmental Justice and External Civil Rights is awarding approximately $2 billion in grants to fund community driven projects that address climate challenge and reduce pollution while strengthening communities through thoughtful implementation. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis with initial award selections beginning in March 2024. The final application deadline is November 21, 2024.

Apply for USDA’s Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Community Food Projects Food Loss and Waste Training and Technical Assistance Grants
Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education is leading a national Community Foods Project Food Loss and Waste Training and Technical Assistance Grants Program. The program supports projects that align with USDA activities aimed at reducing food loss and waste, getting surplus wholesome food to individuals, and developing linkages between food producers, providers, and food recovery organizations.
The goal of the CFP Food Loss and Waste Training and Technical Assistance Grants program is to implement outreach, training, and technical assistance efforts to build capacity for food loss and waste initiatives. Eligible entities include, but are not limited to, Tribal organizations; non-governmental organizations; community organizations; gleaning and food recovery organizations; public food program service providers; and academic institutions.
Application deadline: June 28, 2024
