EPA Takes Another Step to Protect Groundwater from Coal Ash Contamination at an Ohio Facility
On November 18, 2022, EPA finalized a decision on a request submitted for the General James M. Gavin Power Plant in Cheshire, Ohio. The request was for an extension to the deadline for initiating closure of unlined coal ash surface impoundments.
EPA is denying the request because the facility does not meet several requirements in the regulations. Of note is that the unlined coal ash impoundment at this plant, known as the Fly Ash Reservoir, cannot be closed with coal ash in contact with groundwater. Limiting the contact between coal ash and groundwater after closure is critical to minimizing releases of contaminants into the environment.
This facility must stop placing coal ash and non-coal ash wastestreams into their Bottom Ash Pond no later than 135 days after the date of the final decision (April 12, 2023). Read the final decision on our implementation webpage.
