Learn the Facts About Radon

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. Radon is invisible - you cannot see, taste, or smell it, but it may be a problem in your home.  

Exposure to radon causes about 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year. Nearly 1 in 15 homes in the U.S. has high radon levels.

Children can be especially vulnerable to the dangers of radon exposure. They have a different lung shape and size and breathe at higher rates compared to adults, increasing their risk. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, risk of lung cancer in children from radon may be almost twice as high compared to adults exposed to the same amount.

How Radon Can Enter Your Home 

Test Your Home for Radon

• The only way to know the radon level in your home is to test.  

• Getting a radon test is easy and cost-effective. Find where you can get a radon test kit.  

• If your test shows radon levels of 4.0 pCi/L or greater, you should take action.  

• Only hire a qualified professional to install a mitigation system in your home. Contact your state radon program for help in finding qualified professionals in your state.
