 Why National Radon Action Month?
Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers and is responsible for about 21,000 lung cancer deaths every year, yet many people don’t know about radon or the risks it can pose to their family’s health. Each year during NRAM, EPA and our partners amplify messaging about the health risks of radon, the importance of testing for radon, and the existence of straightforward mitigation solutions.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter homes through the soil and build up to dangerous levels inside buildings like homes and schools. It is both colorless and odorless; the only way to know if there are high levels of Radon is to “test your nest!” Testing for radon is easy, inexpensive and can be done by homeowners. Test kits can be purchased online, or testing can be done by a qualified professional. Contact your state or tribal radon program to learn more about programs in your area.
