Evaluating the Health Risks of Radon: Fundamentals and New Scientific Insights
With guest speakers Bill Field, Ph.D. and Brian J. Smith, Ph.D., The University of Iowa's College of Public Health
Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can be found across the United States, is the second-leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. In this webinar, two presenters will describe approaches for estimating the health risk of radon, summarize findings of epidemiologic studies of radon, and share findings of a recent report published by the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), which evaluated lung cancer from exposure to radon.
Radon: Leading Environmental Cause of Cancer Mortality in the United States?
Presented by: Bill Field, Ph.D., Department of Occupational and Environmental Health, The University of Iowa
This presentation will provide a summary of the findings of the various cohort and case-control epidemiologic radon studies and their reported risk estimates, including some of the obstacles reconstructing past radon exposure. In addition, a brief overview of studies suggesting adverse health effects from protracted radon decay product exposure other than lung cancer will be presented.
UNSCEAR 2019 Report: Lung Cancer Risk From Exposure to Radon
Presented by: Brian J. Smith, Ph.D., Department of Biostatistics, The University of Iowa
This presentation will provide a summary of the findings of a recent report published by UNSCEAR, which evaluated lung cancer from exposure to radon. This presentation will provide a brief overview of the report’s findings, including recent developments in risk estimates of lung cancer and radon exposure, radon dosimetry, and dose conversion factors applied for radon dose assessment.
Dr. Bill Field is a professor at The University of Iowa's College of Public Health with appointments in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health and Department of Epidemiology. He also serves as a professor of toxicology within the Graduate College. Dr. Field received a Ph.D. in preventive medicine from the College of Medicine at the University of Iowa. He was the lead author of the Iowa Radon Lung Cancer Epidemiologic Study and a co-author of the North American Radon pooled study. In 2009, his keynote address at the International Radon Meetings launched the World Health Organization's (WHO) Handbook on Indoor Radon on behalf of the WHO's International Radon Project. Dr. Field recently served for 8 years on EPA's Science Advisory Board and currently serves as a Presidential Appointee on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Board on Radiation and Worker Health. He was the 2012 recipient of The University of Iowa’s Michael J. Brody award for his long-term commitment to public health.

Dr. Brian J. Smith is a professor of biostatistics in the College of Public Health at The University of Iowa. He also serves as an instructor and mentor in the National Institutes of Health–funded Iowa Summer Institute in Biostatistics. Dr. Smith received his Ph.D. from The University of Iowa and has an M.S. in statistics from the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Smith serves as co-Director of the Iowa/Mayo Lymphoma SPORE Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Core and as the Director of the Biostatistics Core and is a member of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center Cancer Epidemiology Program. Dr. Smith’s research has focused on residential radon, as a member of the Iowa Radon Lung Cancer Study, and more recently on medical imaging, radiation oncology and lymphoma. Dr. Smith recently served on an expert panel member for the UNSCEAR, contributing to a report evaluating lung cancer from exposure to radon.
