The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proud to share the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Vital Signs report highlighting the powerful impact of our shared work on improving children’s health and the importance of continuing to extend those health gains to all children. Over the last decade, and in close partnership with CDC and other federal partners, EPA has been dedicated to working with health, environment and housing leaders in communities nationwide to control what was once a rapidly growing asthma problem.

Highlights from the report include—

  • Hospitalizations from asthma have fallen by half since 2003.
  • Rates of missed school days from asthma have declined.
  • More children are receiving asthma action plans today than 10 years ago to help manage their environmental triggers and control their asthma with appropriate medication.

This is encouraging progress, but the report also confirms that—

  • Disease disparities continue to exist among low-income, minority children.
  • More than half of children with asthma had at least one asthma attack in 2016.
  • One in six children with asthma visits the emergency department annually.
  • About 1 in 20 children with asthma is hospitalized every year.
