Critical Minerals in the Vegas Spotlight
In a keynote fireside chat on June 23, 2026, at the Fastmarkets Global Lithium, Battery, and Critical Materials Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, Assistant Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson discussed the importance of critical minerals supply chain stability for national security, industrial manufacturing, and emerging technologies. She also explained why DOE funds projects that prioritize advancements in critical minerals mining, manufacturing, and recycling to meet the nation’s energy challenges, from everyday consumer technology to infrastructure and defense systems.

Program Works with Rural Communities
With electricity rates 3–6 times the national average, off-grid communities in Alaska could benefit from energy innovation. These communities pay such high rates due to the cost of transporting 850,000 gallons of fuel each year and maintaining diesel generators in remote locations. DOE’s Energy Improvements in Rural or Remote Areas program currently works with more than 30 rural Alaskan communities to generate nearly 22.5 megawatt-hours of energy on site. This investment will enable communities to meet their annual electricity demand using locally available resources—namely sunlight and water—and avoid shipping costs. That’s the spirit of American innovation!

Save the Date for 2027 Peer Review Meeting
The Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation’s Alternative Fuels and Feedstocks Office will hold its 2027 Peer Review Meeting the week of April 19, 2027, in Arlington, Virginia. This meeting will evaluate office-funded projects for their contributions to DOE’s goals and enable National Lab experts, industry stakeholders, and DOE staff to exchange ideas on cutting-edge technologies that can advance the production and use of domestic feedstocks, fuels, and chemicals. The office’s portfolio aims to mobilize America’s abundant potential for biomass and hydrogen and provide additional fuels, chemicals, and materials that will enable affordable and reliable energy choices for businesses and consumers.
