This time of year, the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office (AMMTO) likes to give thanks to all the incredible and hard-working individuals who support our office. It takes quite the village to help foster a globally competitive U.S. manufacturing sector, and the efforts of this ‘village’ do not go unappreciated.
In the spirit of recognition and gratitude, I’d like to spotlight two AMMTO staff members whose extracurriculars outside of the office also focus on advanced manufacturing. Anyone interested in domestic manufacturing innovation should definitely add these publications to your reading lists. 📚
Dr. Sudarsan Rachuri, a senior technology manager here at AMMTO, is Editor-in-Chief of Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing Systems, an academic journal published by the American Society for Testing and Materials, which fosters transdisciplinary research about how to make manufacturing systems smarter and more sustainable.

Also a leader in the world of scholarly publications is Dr. Cheryl Xu, a current AMMTO AAAS fellow who serves as Editor-in-Chief for Nature’s NPJ Advanced Manufacturing journal—she also happens to be a professor at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at North Carolina State University. Dr. Xu’s journal explores the innovations and transformative technologies that shape a sustainable, efficient, and technologically advanced manufacturing industry (Keep your eyes peeled for another AAAS fellow shoutout later in this newsletter).
Thanks to both Sudarsan and Cheryl for their leadership in the scientific community and for giving our advanced materials and manufacturing researchers prestigious venues to present their scholarly work. And thank you to all who keep this office at the forefront of manufacturing innovation for the nation!

$7 Million to Advance High-Performance Computing for Energy Innovation
Earlier this month, DOE announced $3.4 million in available funding for its High-Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) program. This funding includes HPC4EI’s subprogram High-Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg), co-funded by AMMTO. Successful applicants will work with staff from one or more of DOE’s national laboratories to conduct project activities across the various high-performance computing (HPC) areas of expertise.
Additionally, DOE announced $4 million to fund 10 projects that will harness the raw processing power of the world’s most powerful supercomputers—and the lab experts who operate them—to tackle today’s toughest manufacturing challenges.

AMMTO Is Excited to Work with This New SMART Institute ðŸ§
The Biden-Harris Administration announced a new Manufacturing USA institute that will focus on efforts to develop, validate, and use digital twins to improve domestic semiconductor design, manufacturing, advanced packaging, assembly, and test processes. This new institute, called Semiconductor Manufacturing and Advanced Research with Twins USA (SMART USA), will join an existing network of 17 institutes designed to increase U.S. manufacturing competitiveness and promote a robust R&D infrastructure. AMMTO is expected to work with SMART USA and looks forward to this new collaboration! Read the full announcement.

Open Now: 2025 TCF Base CLIMR Lab Call with up to $36M in Funding for Clean Energy Innovation
DOE’s Office of Technology Transitions (OTT) is seeking applications for the Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) Technology Commercialization Fund (TCF) Base Core Laboratory Infrastructure for Market Readiness (CLIMR) Lab Call. An estimated $30.1 to $36.8 million is expected to be available to fund projects through this lab call. This lab call represents collaboration among OTT and 14 DOE program offices—including AMMTO—demonstrating DOE’s dedication to deploy lasting energy solutions from our renowned national labs, plants, and sites. A description of AMMTO’s topics of interest is provided in the call for proposals.
Concept papers are due no later than 3:00 p.m. ET on Dec. 12, 2024.

Community Energy Innovation Summit
Dec. 4–5, 2024, Chicago, IL
Make plans to attend the Community Energy Innovation Summit, featuring pitch presentations from the winning teams of the Clean Energy and Manufacturing Ecosystem Tracks of the Community Energy Innovation Prize. AMMTO funds the Manufacturing Ecosystem Track, which aims to address key barriers to advancing manufacturing innovation, business models, and market development. The event is free and open to the public.
Deploy24 Summit

The DOE-hosted event will feature information and idea sharing as well as robust dialogue and debate about how to accelerate America’s energy transformation and economic competitiveness. Meet AMMTO team members at EERE’s Office Hours in the Exchange to chat more about our office’s mission space and the several draft reports we’ve released that are currently soliciting input.
AMMTO Stakeholder Listening Event

AMMTO is hosting an in-person Stakeholder Listening Event to share with our community our current strategy, priorities, and successes. TIME Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential climate leaders in business was just released for 2024 and AMMTO was pleased to see the names of two Lab-Embedded Entrepreneurship Program alumni included on that illustrious list: Megan O'Connor of Nth Cycle and Tim Latimer of Fervo Energy. Megan and Tim were members of the first LEEP fellow cohorts (Innovation Crossroads and Cyclotron Road, respectively) and their technologies have received repeated follow-on funding from DOE and other government agencies.
They're in decent company, you could say, as this list also includes Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, DOE Chief Commercialization Officer Vanessa Z. Chan... oh, and Bill Gates.
