Understanding how wildlife interacts with solar arrays is critical to maintaining healthy ecosystems while deploying clean energy. Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory developed a camera system that greatly expands our knowledge of how birds interact with solar panels, using artificial intelligence. Now, they’re testing this system across the country to support ecologically responsible solar deployment.
SETO issued an RFI seeking input on supporting successful solar plus storage deployment serving low-income and disadvantaged communities. Read the summary of the 30 responses from various solar industry stakeholders, including solar developers and manufacturers, trade associations, state and local government, financial institutions, researchers, consultants, nonprofits, and community-based organizations.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency published several new frequently asked questions about managing end-of-life solar panels under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), including how to use knowledge or analytical testing to make a hazardous waste determination on solar panels, how the RCRA regulations apply to solar panels that are reused and recycled, and how solar panels may be legitimately recycled. If you have any questions about this, you can reach out to Phoebe O’Connor (OConnor.Phoebe@epa.gov).
Amateur and professional photographers are invited to submit their images to the new Framing the Future: Industrial Technologies Photo Contest from DOE’s Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office. The contest is designed to document and communicate the innovative technologies, processes, and people that will help the United States achieve a decarbonized industrial sector and a net-zero-emissions economy by 2050. You could win $2,000 for a photo in one of six categories. Submissions are due by November 21.
DOE’s Office of Technology Transitions is seeking applications from national laboratories, plants, and sites for the Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) Core Laboratory Infrastructure for Market Readiness (CLIMR) Lab Call. The FY25 CLIMR Lab Call is designed to boost America’s energy competitiveness by facilitating the transition of critical technologies for use in the private sector. Submit concept papers by December 12.
