Welcome!
The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation (Joint Office) applauds the recent vote by the SAE Electric Vehicle Coupler Task Force to establish the J3400 standard as a recommended practice, marking a significant step toward ensuring safe, reliable electric vehicle (EV) charging for all drivers. This milestone brings the J3400 standard closer to official publication, expanding charging access nationwide and supporting the broader adoption of EVs. The Joint Office remains committed to making electric mobility accessible for everyone, regardless of what they drive or where they charge.

The Joint Office and Federal Highway Administration opened a Request for Information today to gather feedback and learn about EV charging infrastructure needs for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles as we work to decarbonize freight.
The Joint Office is committed to making it easy for anyone to choose electric mobility, no matter what they drive or where they charge. In response to multiple automakers’ decisions to adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) developed by Tesla, the Joint Office has been actively collaborating with industry stakeholders to develop the open J3400 standard. This standard is designed to ensure safe, reliable charging for drivers of all EVs.
There are now more than 192,000 publicly available charging ports in the United States, marking an increase of about 9,000 ports in the last 3 months, as well as an important milestone: doubling our national charging network since the start of the Biden-Harris administration.
Other News
