$15 Million Lab Call To Facilitate Collaboration and Accelerate Industrial Decarbonization
Join the Teaming Partner List for the $15 million lab call from DOE’s Office of Technology Transitions and the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations, with support from IEDO and the Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains. This funding will address adoption challenges that prevent later stage commercialization, demonstration, and deployment of industrial decarbonization technologies through the Collaborative Alignment for Critical Technology Industries – Industrial Decarbonization Lab Call.

Framing the Future Contest Seeks Photos of America’s Industrial Transformation
Calling all photographers with an eye for decarbonization! IEDO’s Framing the Future: Industrial Technologies Photo Contest is still ongoing. The contest is open through Nov. 21, 2024, to photographers of all proficiency levels. Contest winners will be awarded up to $2,000 for a photo in one of six categories.

$142 Million in Grants to Small Businesses
On Sept. 3, 2024, DOE announced awards for 123 projects, totaling $142 million for small businesses in 34 states. These Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) awards transform DOE-supported science and technology breakthroughs into viable products and services, creating a bridge between the laboratory and the marketplace. IEDO is investing $3.4 million in three projects focused on reducing carbon emissions associated with materials used for food packaging, heat exchangers, and the production of ammonia.
Clean Energy Resources To Meet Data Center Electricity Demand
On Aug. 12, 2024, DOE’s Office of Policy released a blog post outlining DOE resources available to help data center developers meet electricity demands with clean energy solutions that can improve flexibility and modernize the grid while maintaining reliability and affordability. Addressing rising electricity demand requires a portfolio approach to meet near-term growth with commercially available technologies while also paving the way to support long-term growth. This portfolio includes many resources cultivated and supported by IEDO programs, such as Better Plants, 50001 Ready energy management, and Onsite Energy.
Report Shows Clean Energy Jobs Grew at More Than Twice the Rate of Overall U.S. Employment
Check out DOE’s newly released 2024 U.S. Energy and Employment Report, a comprehensive study designed to track and understand employment trends across the energy sector. This year’s report reflects a record number of survey responses from 42,000 business nationwide.

RECAP: Scaling Sustainable Chemistry for an Industrial Transformation
Earlier this month, IEDO and Change Chemistry hosted an interagency summit, specifically on scaling sustainable chemistry solutions for industrial transformation to foster more secure chemical sector supply chains. Both public and private sector thought leaders joined together to discuss the technologies, policy, and regulatory reforms, and collaborations needed to scale sustainable chemistry from lab to market.

Check out the study recently published by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, in collaboration with IEDO, identifying current interconnection rules and the associated barriers for integrating combined heat and power and waste heat to power systems in the electric grid. This study also proposed specific combined-heat-and-power model guidance for consideration by state regulators and utilities.
Review the newly released workshop report on the Measuring Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions From Water Resource Recovery Facilities Workshop, which IEDO hosted on Jan. 23–24, 2024, in Washington, D.C. The event brought together representatives from water resource recovery facilities, national laboratories, technology providers, academic researchers, industry consultants, and government agencies, to gather input on the challenges and opportunities in greenhouse gas measurement at water resource recovery facilities.
Paul Majsztrik, the program manager for the Energy- and Emissions-Intensive Industries program, spoke at the 11th annual E-ffiliates Retreat hosted by the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment. The event united leading voices from academic institutions, companies, nonprofits, and government offices around a shared goal of lowering the industrial sector’s carbon intensity. Two other members of the IEDO team, Daniel Stewart and Isabelle Rojas—both contractors with Energetics—also spoke at the event.

Two innovative technologies from DOE’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have been honored with a 2024 R&D 100 Award. The award, presented by R&D Magazine and selected by an independent panel of judges, recognizes the year’s 100 most innovative and disruptive technology products from industry, academia, and government-sponsored research. The lab’s winning technologies improve wastewater treatment and develop software for autonomous labs of the future.

American Ceramic Society’s member magazine recently covered IEDO’s technical assistance programs and resources. The article gives an overview of the resources available to ceramic and glass manufacturers, which include energy management support, technology-specific guidance, and in-plant technical assistance.

IEDO is conducting an industry workshop focused on innovations in sustainable food and beverage packaging to be held in Chicago, Illinois. The workshop will bring together industry stakeholders to identify key challenges, priorities, and opportunities surrounding sustainable packaging as part of industrial decarbonization efforts with respect to the U.S. food and beverage manufacturing sector.
DOE’s Better Plants program is returning to AEE World this year in Nashville, Tennessee, where the 2024 theme will be energy solutions for global challenges. This year, DOE is soliciting partners for the Better Plants track, Lessons From Leaders in Industrial Decarbonization. DOE will also have a luncheon to recognize Better Plants and Better Climate Challenge partners who have reached their goals. Attend the event to learn more about IEDO's strategy to accelerate the innovation and adoption of cost-effective technologies that eliminate industrial greenhouse gas emissions.
Register for the Better Plants program’s virtual training on industrial steam systems. This virtual training will be performed by industrial experts and technical account managers using online video communication technologies. The 2.5-hour online training will be delivered on every other Wednesday and Thursday 10 a.m. –12:30 p.m. ET for four weeks. Participation in these virtual trainings is free and open to all members of the U.S. manufacturing industry.
