Forecasts Call for More Investment and Deployment of Wind Energy

The data on wind are in! Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released its annual wind market reports. The three reports include the latest data and trends on domestic wind energy development, technologies, costs, prices, and performance for land-based wind and distributed wind through the end of 2023, and for offshore wind through May, 2024. The reports find that the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) has led to significant increases in near-term wind deployment forecasts and has motivated billions of dollars of investment in the domestic wind supply chain.

Offshore Wind

The U.S. offshore wind industry is showcasing potential growth, with the capacity of offshore wind energy projects in various stages of development increasing by 53%. This brings the amount of offshore wind capacity in the development pipeline to 80,523 megawatts (MW) enough to power over 26 million American homes if fully developed.

Land-Based Wind Market Report

Land-Based Wind

The U.S. wind industry installed nearly 6,500 megawatts (MW) of new land-based wind capacity in 2023, bringing the cumulative total to nearly 150,500 MW. In fact, utility-scale wind power is currently installed in 43 states across the nation. As utility-scale wind power grows across the nation, so too are wind turbines. Wind turbines are getting bigger and more powerful, keeping wind energy cost-competitive. The average height of these new turbines is taller than the Statue of Liberty!

Distributed Wind Market Report

Distributed Wind

The U.S. distributed wind sector—which includes power from wind turbines installed near where it will be used—added 10.5 MW of new capacity, representing $37 million in new investment. Cumulative U.S. distributed wind capacity stands at 1,110 MW. This type of wind serves all kinds of customers from all over the country, using over 92,000 wind turbines across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam.

DOE Supports Consortium Technology Innovation $10.6 Million Funding Opportunity 

WETO is pitching in on a new offshore wind R&D funding opportunity to help support offshore wind! The National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium (NOWRDC) announced it will fund up to $10.6 million of groundbreaking projects that seek to advance floating offshore wind through port and vessel innovations, improved transmission technology, and the development of uncrewed underwater vehicles for environmental monitoring.

DOE and Joint Office of Energy and Transportation Just Announced a $11.2 Million Funding Opportunity to Pilot Interconnection and Energization Queue Management Solutions   

DOE's Innovation Interconnection e-Xchange (i2X) and Joint Office of Energy and Transportation just launched the Innovative Queue Management Solutions for Clean Energy Interconnection and Energization program Funding Opportunity, which will award $11.2 million to distribution utilities to pilot innovative solutions for managing renewable energy interconnection and electric vehicle charging equipment energization queues.

WETO and NSF Award Funding to Accelerate Floating Offshore Wind Research 

WETO and the National Science Foundation (NSF) are funding a new research project at Johns Hopkins University and Portland State University to advance fluid dynamics research for floating offshore wind modeling and design.   • On the latest episode of the podcast Volts, DOE Offshore Wind Lead Jocelyn Brown-Saracino joined fellow guest Adam Stern of Offshore Wind California to discuss the floating offshore wind energy landscape and why floating technologies will be needed to meet the state’s goal of 5 GW of offshore wind by 2030
  • WETO recently announced the Offshore Wind National and Regional Research and Development funding opportunity, which will award $48.6 million for projects that address several major areas of need for offshore wind. 
  • The U.S. Department of Treasury and DOE released a recording of a June webinar providing an overview on how the guidance from IRS and Treasury makes it easier for developers to determine if they can qualify for the domestic content bonus by purchasing products made with domestic components.
  • DOE recently issued a Request for Information (RFI) focused on West Coast offshore wind transmission. This RFI is part of a multi-tiered approach to gather information to address challenges and barriers to efficiently capturing clean, reliable power from West Coast offshore wind resources and delivering it to communities that need it the most.
