Electric heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) can be two to four times more efficient than standard units, with significant energy savings and carbon emission reduction. EERE released a new web-based tool, a one-stop shop for selecting and installing HPWHs in your home: the HPWH Installation Tool! Find out more about the HPWH Installation Tool’s guidance for installers, sales associates, and homeowners to help overcome barriers to HPWH adoption. Photo courtesy of Hot Water Solutions

When she was in high school, Chenn Zhou planned to earn a liberal arts degree—until her homeroom teacher convinced her to pursue engineering. Since then, Zhou has become a successful mechanical engineer, professor, and founding director of Purdue University Northwest Center for Innovation and the nationwide Steel Manufacturing Simulations and Visualization Consortium. Zhou has also worked on several projects funded by DOE and collaborated with over 180 organizations. Read more about Zhou’s career and her thoughts on artificial intelligence (AI) in steel manufacturing.

Concentrating solar-thermal (CST) technology uses mirrors to reflect and concentrate sunlight onto a receiver, helping produce carbon-free, clean fuels, heat, and storage—so we can rely less on fossil fuels! EERE announced $33 million for nine projects across seven states to advance CST systems technologies for solar fuel production and long-duration energy storage. Read more about how these projects will advance lower-cost methods of decarbonization.

When it comes to achieving a clean energy future, every little step helps—including distributed energy resources that generate, store, and manage power locally, often in rural America. WETO has funded multiple projects to advance this cleaner, affordable, and locally generated electricity, including projects that model, optimize, and certify improved wind turbine designs. Read more about WETO’s projects as they work toward improving the next generation of distributed wind technology.

Wood is an important renewable energy source for residential heat, but wood heaters are a substantial source of particulate matter emissions. So, EERE’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) released a request for information on how to improve the design of wood heaters and reduce their emissions while increasing their efficiency. Have expert knowledge to share? Answer the request by September 20!
