The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation has achieved meaningful milestones on our journey toward making it easy for anyone to ride and drive electric. This month, check out our new accomplishments page to learn how we’ve worked across the federal government and with communities, the private sector, and electric vehicle (EV) drivers to build out convenient, reliable infrastructure to support zero-emission transportation.

The first National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program-funded electric vehicle charging stations are now open in Rhode Island. With the station openings, the state becomes the first in the nation to have its designated alternative fuel corridor certified as fully built out, unlocking remaining funding to support EV charging where people live, work, and play.
Electronic Design magazine covers industry adoption of the EVerest open source software platform giving companies a foundation to innovate on top of reliable, interoperable EV charging solutions.
Fiscal Year 2024 Solar Energy Supply Chain Incubator Funding Opportunity Updated to Include EVSE
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) updated the Fiscal Year 2024 Solar Energy Supply Chain Incubator funding opportunity to include EVSE permitting. Topic Area 3 will fund outreach, education, or software technology development activities for permitting software that automates code compliance checks and permitting for rooftop solar PV, rooftop solar PV with energy storage, or residential and commercial electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE).
The permitting software must be designed for use by solar or EVSE installers to submit rooftop solar or residential and/or commercial EVSE permit applications, and by local governments to automate their review and approval. The software must be beyond the planning, design, and development stage of the software development life cycle. For more information, view the full FOA (Number: DE-FOA-0003289) on EERE Exchange. Concept papers are due July 19.
EV Charging for Those without a Garage
Executive Director Gabe Klein speaks to Volts about how the Joint Office is going beyond fast charging to bring convenient, reliable charging everywhere people need it.
Federal Headlines
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today announced approximately $1.5 billion in funding to support 117 projects that will improve public transportation in 47 states. Under the president’s historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, FTA has awarded nearly $5 billion in the past three years to replace and modernize transit buses on America’s roadways, building new technology with American workers. U.S. factories will produce more than 4,600 of these new buses.
DOE Releases Vision for the Beneficial Integration of Electric Vehicles into the Electricity Grid
As part of its EVGrid Assist initiative, DOE has released The Future of Vehicle Grid Integration: Harnessing the Flexibility of EV Charging, illustrating the characteristics of a future where vehicles are successfully integrated as part of the power grid. This document serves as a guidepost for the industry, offering direction for stakeholders as they develop products, identify opportunities for standardization, and design new policies, rates, and services, among other activities. Read the announcement and download the document here. Interested stakeholders can sign up to participate in upcoming stakeholder engagement meetings and webinars on the EVGrid Assist website.
