Buying an efficient central air conditioner (AC), which are more efficient than room or window air conditioners, can save you energy and money. Even if your central air conditioner is only 10 years old, you could save 20%–40% of your cooling energy costs by replacing it with a newer, more efficient model.
Central AC systems are rated according to their seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER). SEER indicates the relative amount of energy needed to provide a specific cooling output. Many newer systems have SEER ratings as high as 26.
When buying a central AC unit, you should also look for:
- Variable speed
- Quiet operation
- A filter check light to remind you to keep your unit clean and efficient
- An automatic-delay fan switch to turn off the fan a few minutes after the compressor turns off.
Also, if you upgrade to an ENERGY STAR® certified model, you may be eligible for a tax credit.
