The official start to summer is just around the corner and the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation (Joint Office) is heating up with new resources, webinars, and funding opportunities.

The Biden-Harris administration announced a historic $1.3 billion funding opportunity for electric vehicle (EV) charging and alternative fueling infrastructure in urban and rural communities and along designated highways, interstates, and major roadways. This is the largest single funding opportunity for EV charging in the nation’s history, and it will accelerate public and private investment in the places people live, work, and play. The funding opportunity is made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s signature EV charging investments: the $2.5 billion Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) Discretionary Grant Program and a 10% set-aside from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program designated for funding charger reliability.
Making Electric and Clean School Buses the American Standard
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the 2023 Clean School Bus Program Awards. With funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the program provides $5 billion over 5 years (FY 2022–2026) to replace existing school buses with zero-emission and clean school buses. Under the Clean School Bus Program's multiple grant and rebate funding opportunities to date, the EPA has awarded almost $3 billion to fund approximately 8,500 school bus replacements at more than 1,000 schools. To learn more about the benefits of zero-emission and clean school buses and to access technical assistance provided by the Joint Office, please visit Technical Assistance and Resources for School Districts.
How Fast Is Our EV Charging Network Growing?
"The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation put out a quarterly update on the expansion of the US charging network and it now stands at 183,000 chargers across the US, 13,000 more chargers compared to last quarter."
Joint Office Gives Q2 2024 NEVI Update
"The NEVI Program shows no signs of slowing. EC&M will continue to follow the Joint Office and provide updates on new federally funded stations opening across the country."

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) shared the Solar Technologies’ Rapid Integration and Validation for Energy Systems (STRIVES) funding opportunity announcement. STRIVES will provide up to $31 million to improve power systems simulation software tools and demonstrate new business models for distribution systems operations to integrate and optimize the value of clean energy technologies like solar, wind, storage, building technologies, and EVs. Mandatory concept papers are due on July 25. Register for an informational webinar on June 10 at 1 p.m. ET.
Coming Soon: Funding for Battery and Electrification Research, Development, Demonstration, and Deployment
DOE announced an intent to fund projects that will advance research, development, demonstration, and deployment in several areas critical to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector. The potential funding will drive innovations in low-cost EV battery manufacturing, using inexpensive and abundant battery materials in support of a viable domestic materials supply chain, and conducting smart-charge management demonstrations. Learn more about this notice of intent and other funding opportunities within DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Engaging Utilities: Rural Cooperatives Working to Deploy EV Charging
The Joint Office will host a webinar focused on the landscape of rural utilities in transportation electrification, best practices and strategies for building EV charging infrastructure, and how to plan for future transportation needs. This webinar will include speakers from the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, as well as three rural electrical cooperatives from across the country who will discuss how they are preparing for transportation electrification to serve residential and commercial members.
Discover the National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy
In March 2024, the Joint Office released the National Zero-Emission Freight Corridor Strategy, setting an actionable vision and comprehensive approach to accelerating the deployment of a world-class, zero-emission freight network in the United States. The strategy aims to help align, unlock, and unleash cross-sector investments in zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicle infrastructure and bolster electric grid and hydrogen planning needed to achieve a zero-emission freight network by 2040. Join this webinar to learn more about the data that informed the strategy, see how hydrogen corridors fit into the national approach, discover industry commitment and key milestones, and learn how to provide your input on the strategy to shape future phases.
