Happy Earth Day from EERE
You can trace the life cycle of most manufactured products with a straight line. We harvest the raw material, shape it into something useful, use it until it breaks, then throw it away. As we work toward our midcentury goal of net-zero emissions, EERE is constantly seeking new ways to optimize the use and reuse of important technologies and materials. In case you missed it, check out this piece from our PDAS Jeff Marootian where he shares how EERE is working to transform the production model of our clean energy technologies from a straight line into a circle.

Semiconductor materials like silicon make up crucial components of everyday devices, including smartphones, computers, and electric vehicles (EVs)—but they’re also one of the largest contributors of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by electricity use. That’s why Google has joined other influential companies, like Intel and Microsoft, in signing the Energy Efficiency Scaling for 2 Decades pledge to increase semiconductor energy efficiency 1,000-fold by lowering their energy consumption. Read more about how this pledge, spearheaded by EERE’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office, will guide new technology investments and increase the pool of STEM students passionate about semiconductor technology.
