DOE’s Interconnection Innovation e-Xchange (i2X) published the Transmission Interconnection Roadmap, which identifies solutions to enable interconnection processes that meet the growing demand for renewable energy resources. The roadmap provides the diverse group of interconnection stakeholders with near- and long-term solutions to current challenges in transmission system interconnection.
DOE announced a new $12 million round of funding for the Renewable Energy Siting through Technical Engagement and Planning (R-STEP) program, which funds state-based collaboratives and provides tailored technical assistance to improve renewable energy planning and siting for local communities. Interested applicants are encouraged to form collaboratives and register for a webinar on May 2. Applications are due by June 13.
DOE announced Sunvapor as the second finalist in the American-Made Solar Desalination Prize, a $1 million competition designed to accelerate the development of low-cost desalination systems that use solar-thermal power to produce clean water from salt water. Sunvapor’s technology will help recover clean water from water produced as a byproduct of oil and gas production in the Permian Basin.
SETO announced the selection of nine students for the Solar Manufacturing Internship for Leaders in Energy (SMILE) program. The SMILE program provides an opportunity for students from minority serving institutions to participate in a ten-week internship at one of the companies from SETO’s awardee portfolio, which supports a diverse solar workforce.
Don't forget to participate in these funding opportunities, prizes, and solicitations:
DOE and the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation announced their intent to fund the i2X Innovative Queue Management Solutions for Clean Energy Interconnection and Energization program. The program will award $6.5 million to distribution utilities to pilot innovative solutions for managing renewable energy interconnection and electric vehicle charging equipment energization queues. DOE seeks feedback from distribution utilities on the program structure through a set of market research questions by May 9. A request for proposals for the program is expected to open in the coming weeks. Join the renewable energy funding email list to be notified when this funding is released.
SETO announced two additional projects selected for funding through the Advancing Equity through Workforce Partnerships funding program. Learn how these and other SETO-funded efforts are fostering the development of an equitable clean energy workforce.
DOE announced the second group of Phase 2 winners in the American-Made Community Power Accelerator Prize Round 1. Phase 2 winners will receive up to $200,000 in cash prizes and move on to Phase 3 of the competition for a chance to win up to $150,000 each.
Researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) published study findings from a national survey examining the experiences and perceptions of people living within three miles of large-scale solar energy plants. This research helps inform future and ongoing efforts to reduce barriers to large-scale solar energy deployment nationwide.
According to LBNL’s report, Queued Up: Characteristics of Power Plants Seeking Transmission Interconnection, in 2023, solar energy and battery storage accounted for the fastest growing resources among the backlog of projects waiting to be connected to the grid. Learn more about what is driving these long queues and possible solutions.
Researchers from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) examined the challenges and barriers to implementing solar energy among people in the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program and the Weatherization Assistance Program to address barriers and enable communities to successfully install solar energy resources.
DOE launched the third round of the Clean Energy Innovator Fellowship, a workforce development program that matches recent graduates and new professionals to energy organizations. Fellowship applications are now open through May 3 to recent graduates of bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree programs and mid-career professionals.
