Big Investments in Small Innovative Projects in Solar (SIPS)

New 2024 SIPS Funding Program

DOE announced the 2024 SIPS funding program, which will invest a total of $6.5 million to support innovative and novel ideas in photovoltaics (PV) and concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP) that are riskier than research ideas based on established technologies. Learn more about the topics in this funding opportunity and apply by March 6.

2023 SIPS Selections

DOE selected 24 projects to receive $7.8 million through the 2023 SIPS funding program. Check out the winning projects.

Risky Solar Research Ideas Shine with SIPS

SIPS is an annual SETO program that has been running since 2015. Its streamlined application process makes it ideal for early-career researchers or those who are new to SETO funding. Hear from SIPS researchers about how the award impacted their work and career.

Some Light 🌞 Reading

New Federal Guidance on Community Solar Subscription Fees

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office of Community Services has released new guidance that may make community solar much easier to access in low-income and disadvantaged communities. The guidance allows for funds from the HHS Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to cover community solar subscription fees, removing a barrier to accessing community solar and its meaningful benefits.

Feedback Requested on CSP Receivers and Reactors

SETO issued a request for information to better understand technology development needs and commercialization opportunities for receivers and reactors used in CSP plants for electricity generation and solar industrial process heat generation. Members of the renewable energy industry, academia, research laboratories, government agencies, and other relevant organizations can submit feedback through February 20.

SETO Seeks Input on Deploying Solar Plus Storage to Low-Income and Disadvantaged Communities

SETO is seeking information related to successfully deploying distributed solar and related technologies through industry, government, and utility-led programs designed to serve low-income and disadvantaged communities. Industry, state, Tribal, local government agencies, community-based organizations, and others are invited to respond by February 23.

New Survey Investigates the State of U.S. Solar and Wind Siting

The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory just released a Survey of Utility-Scale Wind and Solar Developers, which assesses their opinions on the current state of siting across the country. Dive into the social factors contributing to ongoing industry concerns.

New Study Shares Data Making CSP Wind Load Design a Breeze

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) published a first of its kind dataset of wind measurements at a commercial CSP plant. Correctly measuring the effect of wind on parabolic troughs and heliostats is a costly part of the CSP plant design process. The worldwide availability of this data will help advance more reliable CSP plants.

Student Opportunity to Work with the National Lab’s Supercomputer

Kestrel is NREL’s high performance computing system dedicated to advancing renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. University students can apply for the opportunity to access Kestrel for their own research supporting clean energy by February 12.

Get Support to Adopt Clean Onsite Energy at Your Facility

Industrial facilities and other large energy users can get assistance to increase their adoption of onsite clean energy technologies. The DOE Onsite Energy program launched a network of Technical Assistance Partnerships to help large energy users transition to clean energy, lower costs, reduce emissions, and increase resilience.

Tribal Energy Funding Opportunity Coming This Spring

The DOE Office of Indian Energy issued a notice of intent to release a $25 million funding opportunity this spring to support clean energy deployment on Tribal lands.
