DOE Announced $121 Million to Reduce Emissions Across America’s Industrial Sector
On November 17, DOE’s Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) announced a $38 million funding opportunity that will accelerate the innovative, cross-sector technologies required to create a clean energy economy. Additionally, DOE announced a notice of intent (NOI) to issue a $83 million funding opportunity that will decrease emissions in the hardest to decarbonize industrial subsectors. By accelerating the development and adoption of sustainable technologies that increase efficiency and eliminate industrial greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, this funding will help tackle the climate crisis, boost the competitiveness of domestic manufacturing, and create good-paying jobs for American workers. Learn more about these funding opportunities.
Decarbonizing Chemicals Manufacturing — New Funding for DOE’s Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment Institute
On October 23, IEDO announced renewed funding for the Rapid Advancement in Process Intensification Deployment (RAPID) Institute. The RAPID Institute is one of DOE’s seven Manufacturing USA Institutes. The 5-year, $40 million investment will propel research, development, and demonstrations (RD&D) of advanced process technologies to enable more resilient, lower cost, and reduced energy and carbon footprint manufacturing in the process industries. This includes the production of chemicals and fuels, which account for more than a third of all U.S. industrial emissions and energy consumption. Read the full announcement.
IEDO and Purdue University Northwest Celebrate a $10 million DOE Grant to Decarbonize the U.S. Steel Industry
On October 11, more than 80 industry, local community, state, federal, and elected leaders gathered at Purdue University Northwest (PNW) to celebrate an IEDO grant of nearly $10 million to support the Development and Demonstration of an Industrial Hydrogen-fired Steel Reheating Furnace (H2RF). This DOE grant will help PNW’s Center for Innovation through Visualization and Simulation lead a nationwide collaboration between industry, academia, and national labs to pioneer a first-of-its-kind industry-scale demonstration of a hydrogen-fired continuous reheating furnace operation that will help reduce carbon emissions across the steel industry. DOE Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Jeff Marootian and IEDO Director Dr. Avi Shultz both gave remarks at the event. Learn more about the event and the H2RF project.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: Developing and Assessing Ideas for Social and Behavioral Research to Speed Efficient and Equitable Industrial Decarbonization
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine is inviting researchers, scholars, practitioners, and experts to submit abstracts for position papers to help inform an upcoming public workshop. This workshop will outline the social, behavioral, and economic sciences and interdisciplinary research needed to develop evidence-based approaches for ensuring the concurrent success of industrial decarbonization, a just transition to clean energy, and American leadership in the next generation of clean energy technologies. Writers will receive funding for their position papers. More information about the project, funded by DOE, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Science Foundation, is available here.
NEW 2023 Sustainable Chemistry Roundtable Report
IEDO and Change Chemistry (formerly the Green Chemistry & Commerce Council, GC3) co-hosted a roundtable on March 7, 2023. The event brought together participants—from industry, national laboratories, small businesses, startups, non-profits, and government—to gather input on how to effectively leverage sustainable chemistry to advance industrial decarbonization, industrial efficiency, and environmental justice goals. Read the 2023 Sustainable Chemistry in RD&D to Transform the Chemicals Sectors Roundtable Report.
