BTO Announces BENEFIT 2024 Funding Opportunity, Concept Papers Due Dec. 18, 2023
The U.S. Department of Energy Building Technologies Office (BTO) recently announced its Building Energy Efficiency Frontiers & Innovation Technologies (BENEFIT) 2024 Funding Opportunity (DE-FOA-0003158). This funding opportunity will invest up to $30 million across nine topic areas to research, develop, and validate technologies with the potential to significantly advance building decarbonization. Technologies developed through BENEFIT 2024 will advance the state-of-the-art for HVAC equipment, lower the cost of building envelope and lighting retrofits, and make buildings more resilient to blackouts and extreme weather.
Equitable decarbonization of the U.S. building stock is central to each of the nine topic areas in the FOA, emphasizing cost-effective, easy-to-deploy technology solutions, and community-oriented project partnerships.
Topic 3a of the 2024 BENEFIT FOA will innovate behind-the-meter electrical systems for building resilience and peak load management that grow nascent product classes that make electrification more viable within existing capacity constraints, such as low-power appliances, energy-storage equipped appliances, low-cost DC-bus retrofits and hardware, and other novel, low-cost load management solutions or power-efficient technologies.
To apply to this FOA, applicants must register with, and submit application materials through, EERE eXCHANGE. Visit energy.gov for more information.
New Proposed Rules To Drive Clean Energy Investments Is Out for Comment
The U.S. Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) recently released guidance on the Investment Tax Credit. This guidance is intended to provide industry with additional clarity related to investment decisions for clean energy projects.
The proposed rulemaking on the Investment Tax Credit, which includes thermal storage, is out now for 60-day comment period. Visit home.treasury.gov for more information and a full list of the Treasury Department’s work to implement the Inflation Reduction Act.
JUMP into STEM Is Challenging Students To Find Thermal Energy Solutions
The sixth annual JUMP into STEM competition is taking building science education out of the classroom and into the real world with new challenges that will inspire creativity, innovation, and teamwork for the next generation of building scientists. This year's challenges focus on thermal energy storage, building envelope performance, and reducing carbon emissions.
The “Keepin' It Cool (or Hot)” challenge encourages participants to seek solutions for thermal energy storage for buildings to optimize energy utilization, enhance sustainability, and increase resilience. Students can develop solutions involving, but not limited to, integration of materials, systems, and controls for the storage and release of energy.
Visit JUMPintoSTEM.org to learn more about opportunities to participate in future seasons as a professor or sponsor.
Read More About Stor4Build on NREL.gov
The article, “Exploring Thermal Energy Storage Solutions for Energy-Efficient Buildings,” on NREL.gov discusses why thermal energy storage research for the buildings sector is important to achieving clean energy goals and how Stor4Build is bolstering the field.
