$121 Million to Reduce Emissions across America’s Industrial Sector
The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy’s (EERE) Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office issued a $38 million funding opportunity announcement (FOA) that will accelerate the innovative, cross-sector technologies required to create a clean energy economy. Additionally, DOE announced a notice of intent to issue an $83 million funding opportunity that will decrease emissions in the hardest to decarbonize industrial subsectors. Concept papers for the FOA are due by Dec. 18, 2023, at 5 p.m. ET.
$9.5 Million in Funding to Increase Hydropower Flexibility
EERE’s Water Power Technologies Office released a funding opportunity to increase hydropower’s flexibility, allowing it to better balance the variability of resources such as wind and solar on the power system. The opportunity will fund projects in three topic areas: hydropower hybrids demonstration, technologies to increase flexibility, and operational flexibility. Register for the informational webinar to be held at 2:30 p.m. ET on Nov. 30, 2023. Concept papers are due by Jan. 18, 2024, at 5 p.m. ET.
Clean energy is essential. It has the power to enhance economic growth, support energy independence, and improve the health and well-being of the American people.
Eight Teams Win Phase 1 of the Microbattery Design Prize EERE’s Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office announced eight winners of the first phase of the Microbattery Design Prize. The goal of the competition is to accelerate the commercialization of microbattery designs and help integrate them into the existing technologies needed for clean energy manufacturing.
Five Teams Win Financial Support for Equitable Community Solar Power Projects DOE’s Solar Energy Technologies Office announced five winners of the 2023 Sunny Awards for Equitable Community Solar, who will each receive $10,000 for their community solar projects or programs. These winners’ projects will provide clean energy access for over 2,400 low- to moderate-income households.
Nine Heliostat Prize Semifinalists Move on to Design Their New Tech DOE selected nine semifinalists from the first phase of the Solar Energy Technologies Office’s Heliostat Prize, a three-contest challenge designed to accelerate technology innovation of selected heliostat components. Semifinalist teams receive $100,000 and work with DOE’s national laboratories and other American-Made Network resources to advance their technology through an initial design in the second phase of the challenge.
Offshore Energy Safety Institute Invests $2.7 Million to Advance Offshore Wind Safety The Ocean Energy Safety Institute, supported by DOE, announced plans to award $2.7 million to six wind energy research projects that will help improve the overall efficiency, operation, and safety of offshore wind energy systems. The wind energy research projects selected for funding will focus on the safe installation, operation, and maintenance of offshore wind energy systems and improving the overall safety of offshore workers.
Nearly $1.8 Million to Support Continuing Marine Energy Projects at U.S. National Laboratories Funded by the Water Power Technologies Office Seedlings and Saplings Program, nine projects will each receive $80,000 to $500,000 to further marine energy research and development at DOE’s national laboratories.
New Request for Information Released to Help Decarbonize the Rail Sector Three EERE offices jointly released the Progression to Net-Zero Emission Propulsion Technologies for the Rail Sector request for information to solicit feedback from members of industry, academia, labs, and government agencies, as well as other stakeholders decarbonizing the rail sector, which generates 2% of U.S. transportation greenhouse gas emissions.
