FUNDING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE OPPORTUNITIES
DOE's Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations is accepting applications for $50 million in new grant funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This opportunity seeks to fund community-based energy projects located in rural or remote areas of the country. The deadline to apply is Oct. 12.
WPTO and the Minority-Serving Institutions STEM Research and Development Consortium are accepting full proposals for a $1.2 million funding opportunity designed to support promising, potentially high-impact water power research ideas from minority-serving colleges and universities. The opportunity includes topics focused on new and innovative ideas to advance marine energy and hydrologic and/or hydropower systems modeling for climate resilience, along with an open topic. Proposals are due Oct. 13.
WPTO is accepting full applications for the Topic Area 2 in its U.S. Tidal Energy Advancement funding opportunity. This topic area will provide up to $10 million to support a community-led tidal and/or current energy planning and development project. The deadline to submit full applications is Oct. 19. Applicants must have already submitted a concept paper to be eligible to submit a full application.

DOE’s American-Made Challenges, managed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, is currently seeking organizations to join as subcontractors in its Power Connector program. From technology scouting to alumni support, these connectors play a strategic role for competitors within the prizes and the program more broadly. Responses are due by 5 p.m. MT on Oct. 23.
DOE’s Wind Energy Technologies Office, in partnership with WPTO and the U.S. Department of the Interior, recently opened a $16.4 million funding opportunity for installation of noise reduction and reliable moorings for offshore wind and marine energy. One of the topic areas focuses on improving the integrity and monitoring of mooring lines for floating offshore wind energy systems and marine energy converters. Concept papers are due by 5 p.m. ET on Nov. 9.
The National GEM Consortium aims to increase the participation of African Americans, American Indians, and Hispanic Americans at the master’s and doctoral levels in engineering and science. Applications for the GEM fellowship program are now open. The deadline to apply is Nov. 10.
The new Make a Splash Photo and Video Contest will offer up to $2,000 each for the best photos and videos of water power technologies, research and development, and infrastructure, along with people and communities contributing to or benefiting from water power. The deadline to submit photos and/or videos to the contest is Nov. 17.
WPTO and the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education are accepting applications for the 2024 Marine Energy Graduate Student Research Program. This program supports graduate students working on marine-energy-focused research theses or dissertations by providing access to expertise, resources, and capabilities available at DOE offices, national laboratories, government and industry partners, and other approved facilities. Fellows are eligible to receive a monthly stipend and other benefits. The deadline to apply is Dec. 1.
WPTO published a notice of intent to issue a $14.5 million funding opportunity to support marine energy research at U.S. institutions of higher education, including minority-serving institutions. WPTO expects to release this funding opportunity in fall 2023 in partnership with DOE’s Wind Energy Technologies Office.
