DOE’s Vehicle Technologies Office Welcomes Clean Energy Expert as New Director

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) welcomes its new Director, Austin Brown. As Director of VTO, Brown will lead activities for research, development, demonstration, and deployment of efficient and clean mobility options that are affordable for all Americans.

"I’m honored and excited to join the Department of Energy team,” Brown said. “The Vehicle Technologies Office has shown great leadership over many years and supported technologies that are already transforming our transportation system. I look forward to helping the office continue to grow its impact and bring the benefits of clean transportation to the American people.”

Dr. Brown is an expert in clean energy and sustainable transportation technologies, and most recently served as Senior Director for transportation Emissions in the White House Office of Domestic Climate Policy. His previous roles included Executive Director of the U.C. Davis Policy Institute for Energy, the Environment, and the Economy; Assistant Director for Clean Energy and Transportation for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy; and Project Leader for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Dr. Brown has also held adjunct faculty positions at U.C. Davis and Johns Hopkins University and previously served as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow with DOE’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Dr. Brown has a bachelor’s degree in physics from Harvey Mudd College and a doctoral degree in biophysics from Stanford University.
