Upcoming Deadlines

Funding and Technical Assistance Opportunities

DOE Announces $27.5 Million Voucher Program to Energize Innovation: DOE's Offices of Technology Transitions, Clean Energy Demonstrations, and Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy announced a new voucher program that will provide $27.5 million in commercialization support to organizations bringing innovative energy technologies to market. This program will lower barriers for small businesses and organizations from underrepresented communities. The deadline for submissions is tomorrow, Aug. 10, 2023.

Phase 4 of H2Os Prize Announced: WPTO announced a fourth phase in the H2Os Prize that will take place this October at the National Hydropower Association's Clean Currents Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio. Phase 4 is open to past H2Os Prize competitors and will challenge them to use modeling, data analytics, and machine learning to schedule hydropower operations, as in previous phases, but perform their work during a live, in-person event. Their strategies will be scored in real time. At the end of the three-day event, winning teams will share an $85,000 prize pool. The deadline for competitors to register is Aug. 16, 2023.

Share Input on Using Wave Energy Converters to Power Offshore Aquaculture: Pacific Northwest National Laboratory seeks input from wave energy converter developers, owners, and/or manufacturers whose devices are capable of powering offshore aquaculture operations. This effort seeks to better understand the potential for co-location of marine energy and offshore aquaculture, including how co-location can be planned from the outset and how to identify suitable areas for a future pilot/demonstration deployment. Input will inform the feasibility assessment and planning for co-location of wave energy and offshore aquaculture. The deadline to submit responses is Aug. 31, 2023.

Deadline Approaching to Compete in Prize Seeking to Harness the Power of Ocean Waves: InDEEP will award up to $2.3 million to competitors investigating novel technologies for harnessing the power of ocean waves and converting it into usable types of energy. The first phase focuses on team building and concept creation and will award up to 20 teams $15,000 each. Submissions are due Aug. 25, 2023. Watch recordings of the InDEEP webinar series on the prize's website.

Funding Aims to Help Small Businesses and Entrepreneurs Commercialize Coastal, Ocean, and Great Lakes-Based Climate Solutions: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration aims to fund eligible organizations to develop business accelerators that provide specific programming and opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs focused on marine-based climate resilience. This effort funded by the Inflation Reduction Act will foster public-private partnerships to develop and support sustainable business models around ocean, coastal, and Great Lakes observation technologies, products, and services that address climate resilience needs. The deadline for applications is Sept. 11, 2023

New Funding Available for Power Research at Minority-Serving Institutions: WPTO and the Minority-Serving Institutions STEM Research and Development Consortium opened a $1.2 million funding opportunity to support water power research ideas from minority-serving colleges and universities. WPTO is launching this program as part of its "Seedlings for Universities" initiative to seed research and development activities in academic institutions that do not have significant existing water power research portfolios. The deadline to submit concept papers for this opportunity is Sept. 12, 2023.

WPTO, NSF Partner to Build Water Power Research Capacity: NSF, in collaboration with WPTO, announced a special funding focus on hydropower and marine energy for new science and engineering proposals submitted to the Engineering Research Initiation solicitation. This solicitation aims to build engineering research capacity across the country by investing in new academic investigators who have yet to receive research funding from federal agencies. The deadline to apply for this funding opportunity is Sept. 15, 2023.

WPTO Is Accepting Applications for Community-Focused Topic in Tidal and Current Energy Systems Funding Opportunity: WPTO is accepting full applications for the second topic area in its U.S. Tidal Energy Advancement funding opportunity. This topic area will provide up to $10 million to support a community-led tidal and/or current energy planning and development project. The deadline to submit full applications is Oct. 19, 2023. Applicants must have submitted a concept paper to be eligible to submit a full application.

WPTO Offering Prizes in Photo and Video Contest: The new Make A Splash Photo and Video Contest will offer up to $2,000 each for the best photos and videos of water power technologies, research and development, and infrastructure, along with people and communities focused on water power. The deadline to submit photos and/or videos to the contest is Nov. 17, 2023.

Upcoming Events

Seedlings Symposium
Aug. 15, 2023, 1–4 p.m. ET, Virtual

On Tuesday, Aug. 15, 1–4 p.m. ET, WPTO is hosting a virtual event where national lab researchers will present innovative research concepts from the office's Seedlings Program for DOE national laboratories. Register to learn about emerging trends in marine energy and hydropower.

Publication of the Month

WPTO Invests Nearly $10 Million to Advance Marine Energy: WPTO announced nearly $10 million for seven innovative projects that will accelerate development and testing of marine energy technologies. These investments advance research on wave-powered technology for use in seawater desalination and support a feasibility study for a potential ocean current test facility. These projects also represent DOE’s first significant investment in marine energy serving the blue economy market.
