Funding and Technical Assistance Opportunities

Waves crash on the shore

Deadlines Approaching for Tidal and Current Energy Systems Funding Opportunity: Concept papers for Topic Area 2 and full applications for Topic Area 1 in WPTO’s U.S. Tidal Energy Advancement funding opportunity are due this month.

  • Topic Area 2 will provide up to $10 million to support a community-led tidal and/or current energy planning and development project. The deadline to submit concept papers is 5 p.m. ET tomorrow, July 13, 2023. Applicants must submit a concept paper to be eligible to submit a full application.
  • Topic Area 1 will provide up to $35 million to support the development of a pilot tidal and/or current energy technology demonstration site in state waters. The deadline to submit full applications is 5 p.m. ET on July 25, 2023.

OCED Seeks Input on Clean Energy Technology Components: OCED released a Request for Information to help inform a potential program to support operational validation of pilot-scale clean energy technology components and subsystems. OCED seeks feedback from small businesses, private investors, incubators and accelerators, and clean energy project developers interested in working with small businesses as technology or component suppliers for their projects. The deadline to provide feedback is July 31, 2023.

WPTO Prize Advances Technologies to Harness the Power of Ocean Waves: InDEEP will award up to $2.3 million to competitors investigating novel technologies for harnessing and converting the power of ocean waves into usable types of energy. The first phase focuses on team-building and concept creation and will award up to 20 teams $15,000 each. Submissions are due Aug. 25, 2023. Watch recordings of the InDEEP webinar series on the prize's website.

National Science Foundation Solicitation to Build Water Power Research Capacity: The National Science Foundation, in collaboration with WPTO, announced a special funding focus on new science and engineering proposals submitted to the Engineering Research Initiation solicitation focused on hydropower and marine energy. The objective of the Engineering Research Initiation solicitation is to build engineering research capacity across the nation by investing in new academic investigators who have yet to receive research funding from federal agencies. The deadline to apply for this funding opportunity is Sept. 15, 2023.

Upcoming Events

UMERC Seminar: Energy Harvesting for the Persistent Presence of Oceanographic Instrumentation

July 19, 2023, 1011 a.m. PT, Virtual

Join the University of Marine Energy Research Community (UMERC) for a virtual presentation describing a number of wave energy projects, including recent installations in Monterey Bay by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. UMERC is a WPTO-sponsored program coordinated by the Pacific Ocean Energy Trust that seeks to foster collaboration among the U.S. marine energy research community.

WPTO Water-Energy Nexus Strategy Workshop

July 25, 2023, 12:30 p.m.–5 p.m. ET, Virtual

The Water-Energy Nexus highlights the interdependence of water and energy resources. Water power technologies depend on water management activities to operate sustainably, and by coordinating trade-offs between energy and water systems, these technologies can play an impactful role in supporting resource synergies. In this context, the co-development of water power can advance mutual goals for different stakeholder groups, especially to support energy and water equity. Join this workshop to learn more about the Water-Energy Nexus and WPTO’s strategy for this space and to provide input on the objectives, questions, and directions WPTO is developing.
