The first phase is centered around team building and concept creation, and will award up to 20 teams $15,000 each. Submissions are due August 25, 2023. Watch recordings of the InDEEP webinar series on the prize’s website.
Ocean Energy Safety Institutre Request for Proposals for Marine Energy Technologies Closing Soon: The Ocean Energy Safety Institute is accepting proposals focused on two target areas related to marine energy technologies:
- Small-scale marine energy solutions that enhance the safety, security, and sustainability of offshore wind energy and oil and gas operations.
- Utility-scale marine energy solutions, leveraging experience from wind energy and oil and gas, that enhance the safety, security, and sustainability of marine energy operations.
The deadline to submit proposals is June 26, 2023.
Hydroelectric Incentives Programs’ Deadlines Approaching: Through the hydroelectric incentives programs, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law invests in the continued operation of the U.S. hydropower fleet to meet the nation’s clean energy goals and ensure a more reliable and resilient electric grid system. The following programs, managed by DOE’s Grid Deployment Office, are currently open:
-
Section 243: Hydroelectric Efficiency Improvement Incentives Program: This program authorizes DOE to provide $75 million in incentive payments. Owners or operators of existing hydroelectric facilities, including pumped storage hydropower, may apply for funding to make capital improvements that can improve their efficiency by at least 3%. Applications are due by 5 p.m. ET on June 20, 2023.
-
Section 247: Maintaining and Enhancing Hydroelectricity Incentives: This program invests $553.6 million to maintain and enhance existing hydroelectric facilities to ensure generators continue to provide clean electricity while integrating renewable energy resources, improving dam safety, and reducing environmental impacts. The deadline to submit letters of intent for this program is 5 p.m. ET on June 22, 2023. Applicants must submit a letter of intent to be eligible to submit a full application.
Submit Applications for TEAMER Technical Support: TEAMER is accepting applications for its 10th round of technical support. TEAMER Requests for Technical Support are a collaboration between a technology developer or researcher, and the facility chosen to help meet the recipient’s technical objectives. The deadline to apply is July 7, 2023.

WPTO Water-Energy Nexus Strategy Workshop
July 25, 2023, 11 a.m.–5 p.m. ET, Virtual
The Water-Energy Nexus highlights the interdependence of water and energy resources. Water power technologies depend on water management activities to operate sustainably, and by coordinating tradeoffs between energy and water systems can play an impactful role in supporting resource synergies. In this context, the co-development of water power can advance mutual goals for different stakeholder groups, especially to support energy and water equity. Join this workshop to learn more about the nexus and WPTO’s strategy for this space, as well as to provide input on the objectives, questions, and directions WPTO is developing.
Publication of the Month
Meet the Winners of the 2023 Hydropower and Marine Energy Collegiate Competitions: WPTO announced the winners of the 2023 Hydropower Collegiate Competition and Marine Energy Collegiate Competition in May at Waterpower Week in Washington, D.C. Endicott College and University of New Hampshire were the overall winners of the inaugural Hydropower Collegiate Competition and the fourth annual Marine Energy Collegiate Competition, respectively. These competitions help undergraduate and graduate students prepare for jobs in hydropower, marine energy, and related industries by challenging them to develop unique solutions to advance these technologies. WPTO also announced the teams selected to compete in the 2024 competitions.
