Biden-Harris Administration Releases First-Ever National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap to Build a Clean Energy Future, Accelerate American Manufacturing Boom
DOE, in conjunction with other federal agencies, developed the U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, a comprehensive framework for accelerating the production, processing, delivery, storage, and use of clean hydrogen—a versatile and flexible energy carrier that can be produced with low or zero carbon emissions.
DOE Announces $4 Million to Reduce Wood Heater Pollutants and Accelerate Innovative Technology
Nearly 11 million U.S. homes use cordwood or wood pellets for space heating, producing 7% of the nation’s harmful particulate emissions. Now, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory are teaming up to improve air quality on wood heater innovation, with $4 million in funding provided by EERE’s Bioenergy Technologies Office. Concept papers are due August 11.

American-Made Heliostat Prize: Phase One Opened June 1
EERE’s Solar Energy Technologies Office wants to reduce the cost and improve the performance and reliability of heliostats. A critical component of concentrated solar power systems, heliostats track the sun’s movement and tilt mirrors to reflect sunlight to a receiver, where the heat it generates can be saved for long-duration energy storage and converted into electricity.
The American-Made Heliostat Prize is a multi-phase competition offering $3 million in cash prizes for innovations and credible concepts for technology supporting heliostat technologies. Competitors will advance from concept to prototype on an accelerated schedule—just short of 18 months. Concept papers are due July 31.

DOE Announces Phase Two Winners in the Community Clean Energy Coalition Prize
All 10 teams participating in the inaugural American-Made Community Clean Energy Coalition Prize have successfully completed Phase Two—receiving $150,000 and moving on to the final phase of the prize. The competition aims to develop partnerships between organizations that are assisting underrepresented communities in finding clean, renewable solutions to their local energy challenges.

DOE Retiring Home Performance with ENERGY STAR®
After more than 20 years, DOE is sunsetting the whole-home retrofit program known as Home Performance with ENERGY STAR (HPwES). The federal 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) provide states with resources to achieve many objectives pursued by HPwES. Eliminating HPwES will give home performance programs the flexibility to help states achieve the clean energy goals of BIL and IRA.
Office of Management and Budget Releases Request for Information on the U.S. Bioeconomy
The Office of Management and Budget is seeking input from public stakeholders about improving and enhancing federal statistical data collection designed to measure the economic value of the U.S. bioeconomy (the share of the economy based on products, services, and processes derived from biological resources, such as plants and microorganisms, for example).
New 48C Tax Credit Will Spur Historic Investments in Manufacturing and Critical Materials
As part of President Biden's Investing in America agenda, DOE, the U.S. Department of the Treasury, and the Internal Revenue Service announced $4 billion in tax credits for projects that expand clean energy or critical materials manufacturing or recycling, with $1.6 billion set aside for projects in designated energy and coal communities. Concept papers are due July 31.
