Office of Management and Budget Releases Request for Information on the U.S. Bioeconomy
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has released a new Request for Information (RFI) to public stakeholders seeking to improve and enhance federal statistical data collection designed to measure the economic value of the U.S. bioeconomy. The National Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Initiative - Measuring the Bioeconomy RFI solicits input regarding revisions to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and the North American Product Classification System (NAPCS) on emerging biobased activities.
Advances in biotechnology and biomanufacturing address a range of issues including health, climate change, energy, food security, agriculture, labor opportunities and economic growth. Directed by Executive Order 14081,“Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe, and Secure American Bioeconomy,” an Interagency Technical Working Group (ITWG) was formed to conduct a formal review of and recommend bioeconomy-related revisions to the NAICS and NAPCS to strengthen how the U.S. bioeconomy is measured and to assess its contributions to the whole U.S. economy.
The ITWG encourages input from both its industry and research stakeholders, recognizing that NAICS/NAPCS classifications play a vital role in both public and private sector business operations. Interested parties should respond to this important RFI no later than June 12, 2023, and share the above with interested parties within and outside your organization.
The public is also invited to present insights and recommendations to the working group on how to assess the bioeconomy and to measure its contributions to the U.S. economy through the NAICS and NAPCS.
