Bioprocessing Separations Consortium Spotlights Three-Year Update and Announces Bioenergy STEM Workshop for Students!

While fossil fuels still dominate the energy landscape, biomass is becoming a power player in the clean energy revolution. Separating valuable compounds from other components – like isolating fuel molecules from water, microorganisms, and other organic material present in biomass conversion – is key to the biofuel production process.  Over the last three years, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) Bioprocessing Separations Consortium, made up of six national laboratories, has shown that separations technology is critical to converting biomass to low-carbon biofuel.

The consortium’s goal is to develop separation technologies that are cost-effective, high-performing and can be scaled up, and is dedicated to overcoming the energy and environmental barriers in bioseparations. The consortium recently released its three-year project update, which describes their capabilities and activities and summarizes project progress.

Project highlights include:

  • Counter-Current Chromatography
  • Lignin Fractionation and Purification
  • Redox-Based Electrochemical Separations
  • Volatile Products Recovery
  • 2,3-Butanediol Separations

Bioenergy Bridge to Career Program Workshop

The Bioprocessing Separations Consortium will also be hosting a four-day virtual workshop this summer for undergraduate students interested in learning about the bioenergy field. The Bioenergy Bridge to Career Program Workshop will introduce the topic of bioenergy and expose students to leading-edge research on subjects such as bioenergy production, bioenergy benefits, biomass feedstock type, and biomass conversion technologies with a specific focus on separation processes. The workshop will take place on four consecutive Fridays, starting on July 14, and ending on August 4.

View all project highlights and learn more about how the Bioprocessing Separations Consortium is supporting a clean energy transition.  For more information and to register for their bioenergy student workshop, visit the Bioenergy Bridge to Career Program webpage.

BETO supports technology research, development, and demonstration to accelerate greenhouse gas emissions reductions through the cost-effective and sustainable use of biomass and waste feedstocks across the U.S. economy. BETO is part of DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.
