An Introduction to Water Power Webinar

April 24, 2023, 3–4:30 p.m., Virtual

Join Sandia National Laboratories for an all-academia webinar during which national laboratory scientists researching water power will explain the benefits of this clean energy, including reduced carbon emissions, greater U.S. energy independence, increased affordability, and enhanced reliability, security, and resilience. Researchers will also share their personal experiences in water power, answering the following questions:

  • How did they become interested in water power?
  • What paths did they take to become marine energy researchers?
  • What types of research are they currently working on?

Marine Energy and Hydropower Collegiate Competitions at Waterpower Week 2023

May 7–10, 2023, Washington, D.C.

WPTO, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Hydropower Foundation, and the National Hydropower Association have partnered to bring more than 150 students to the WPTO-funded Hydropower and Marine Energy collegiate competitions at Waterpower Week. The final events for the 2023 competitions will take place alongside the conference, allowing attendees the opportunity to meet the next generation of the water power industry. Multidisciplinary teams of undergraduate and graduate students will present the results of their year-long projects to a panel of judges, participate in opening and closing ceremonies for the competition, and network with conference attendees. Those attending Waterpower Week 2023 are encouraged to meet the students and help inspire them to pursue a career in water power!

InDEEP Competitor Training Webinars

InDEEP awards up to $2.3 million in cash prizes toward competitors investigating novel technologies for harnessing and converting the power of ocean waves into usable types of energy. The above webinars are meant to prepare competitors for the prize and allow for Q&A sessions.

Funding and Technical Assistance Opportunities

Deadline Approaching for Hydropower and Marine Energy Collegiate Competitions: The deadline is approaching to submit applications for the second annual Hydropower Collegiate Competition (HCC) and fifth annual Marine Energy Collegiate Competition (MECC). These two competitions help undergraduate and graduate students prepare for jobs in hydropower, marine energy, and related industries by challenging them to develop unique solutions to advance these technologies. Applications for both competitions are due April 24, 2023.

DOE Launches Second Round of Clean Energy Innovator Fellowship Program: DOE launched the second round of the Clean Energy Innovator Fellowship, a unique workforce development program that matches recent graduates and new energy professionals with key energy organizations to support efforts to advance clean energy solutions. DOE has opened applications for eligible host institutions, including state public utility commissions, grid operators, cooperative and municipal utilities, tribal utilities, inter-tribal councils or other tribal organizations, and essential energy organizations in Puerto Rico. The deadline for eligible host institutions to apply is April 27, 2023. Applications for Innovator Fellows will open on May 22, 2023 and are due on June 8, 2023.

Biden-Harris Administration Announces $450 Million To Deploy Clean Energy Projects on Mine Lands: DOE's Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations announced $450 million in new funding to deploy clean energy projects, which can include pumped storage hydropower, on current (operating) and former (abandoned or inactive) mine land across America, which will help revitalize hard-hit energy communities and spur economic development. Concept papers for this opportunity are due May 11, 2023.

DOE Offering $50 Million to Support Clean Energy Deployment on Tribal Lands: DOE's Office of Indian Energy is accepting applications from Indian tribes looking to install clean energy technologies on tribal lands. This opportunity seeks applications to:

  • Install clean energy-generating systems and/or energy efficiency measures for tribal buildings.
  • Deploy community-scale clean energy generating systems or community energy storage on tribal lands.
  • Install integrated energy systems for autonomous operation to power a single or multiple essential tribal buildings during emergency situations or for tribal community resilience.
  • Provide electric power to tribal buildings that otherwise would be unelectrified.

The deadline to apply for this funding opportunity is May 16, 2023.

ETIPP Accepting Applications from Remote and Island Communities: DOE is accepting applications for technical assistance through ETIPP, which works alongside remote and island communities seeking to transform their energy systems and increase energy resilience. Applicants must consult with an ETIPP regional partner before applying. The deadline to submit an application is May 19, 2023.

OESI Releases Marine Energy Proposal Request: OESI released a request for proposals focused on two target areas:

  • Small-scale marine energy solutions that enhance the safety, security, and sustainability of offshore wind energy and oil and gas operations.
  • Utility-scale marine energy solutions, leveraging experience from wind energy and oil and gas, that enhance the safety, security, and sustainability of marine energy operations.

The deadline to submit proposals is June 19, 2023.

WPTO Launches Prize to Harness the Power of Ocean Waves: InDEEP awards up to $2.3 million to competitors investigating novel technologies for harnessing and converting the power of ocean waves into usable types of energy. The first phase is now open for submissions and will close on August 25, 2023. See the Upcoming Events section for information on upcoming webinars related to the prize.

Coming Soon: WPTO Funding Opportunity to Advance Tidal and Current Energy Systems: In the coming weeks, WPTO expects to release a $45 million funding opportunity to advance tidal and current energy systems. This opportunity will advance a comprehensive approach to tidal and current energy development in the United States, ranging from funding community-led planning and project execution to making the first large-scale investment in a tidal research, development, and demonstration site. The notice of intent is currently available on the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Funding Opportunity Exchange.
