Labs Will Support Storage Performance and Commercialization

The Office of Electricity today awarded a total of $2 million to a team of six DOE national laboratories to carry out the Rapid Operational Validation Initiative (ROVI). ROVI will accelerate the performance validation of new energy storage systems, which is important because storage is key to supporting a resilient, reliable, and clean electricity grid.

This award covers ROVI’s first phase, where the lab team will work closely with industry and academia to develop a framework outlining data needs and a strategic roadmap to complete the program.

The labs are:

  • Argonne National Laboratory
  • Idaho National Laboratory
  • National Renewable Energy Laboratory
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory
  • Pacific Northwest National Laboratory
  • Sandia National Laboratories

ROVI supports the DOE-wide Energy Storage Grand Challenge (ESGC) strategy by accelerating the ability to validate storage technology performance.

As a part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of 2021, Congress appropriated $505 million for the development of grid-scale, long-duration energy storage demonstrations. ROVI will support performance reporting requirements and commercialization objectives.
