Submit Applications for $10.3 Million Funding Opportunity to Advance Marine Energy Innovation: There is still time to submit a full application for the U.S. Department of Energy Water Power Technologies Office’s (WPTO) $10.3 million funding opportunity aimed at accelerating the development and testing of marine energy technologies with a focus on wave and ocean current resources. This opportunity will invest in projects that advance wave-powered technology innovation, research, and development for seawater desalination as well as a feasibility assessment for an ocean-current test facility. Full applications are due by Feb. 24, 2023, and are only being accepted from applicants who submitted a concept paper by the Dec. 2, 2022, deadline. 

NOAA Announces $30 Million Funding Opportunity for Marine Carbon Dioxide Removal: NOAA is seeking applications and proposals for a $30 million funding opportunity focused on marine carbon dioxide removal. To be eligible for this funding opportunity, each proposing team must include participants from at least two of the following sectors: academia, private sector, or government. The deadline to submit full applications is Feb. 28, 2023.

TEAMER Accepting Applications for Technical Support: TEAMER is accepting applications through March 3, 2023, for its next request for technical support. The access period for teams to utilize facilities for request for technical support 9 is August 2023–April 2024. Sponsored by WPTO and directed by the Pacific Ocean Energy Trust, TEAMER offers marine energy stakeholders and developers access to the nation’s best facilities and expertise to support technology development and testing. To date, TEAMER has provided more than $10 million worth of technical support across 101 marine energy projects.

Deadline Nearing to Apply for Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Funding for Hydropower Projects: WPTO is accepting applications for a $14.5 million funding opportunity to further the sustainable development of hydropower and pumped storage hydropower technologies. Advancing these technologies will also enable increased deployments of other sources of renewable energy generation. Full applications are due March 6, 2023, and are only being accepted from applicants who submitted a concept paper by the Dec. 1, 2022, deadline.

Deadline Approaching to Apply to Work with National Labs: WPTO is partnering with DOE’s Office of Technology Transitions and eight other program offices for this year’s Technology Commercialization Fund Base Annual Appropriations National Laboratory call. Potential topics for funding include a market needs assessment, curation of intellectual property, matchmaking, technology-specific partnerships, streamlining laboratory processes, and increasing external partnerships. The deadline to submit full applications is March 17, 2023.

$4 Million Fish Passage Technology Funding Opportunity Accepting Applications: WPTO is accepting applications for a funding opportunity to enhance innovative fish passage and protection technologies. Improvements in technology to help fish move safely through hydropower facilities will support reducing environmental impacts and restoring fish population levels. Full applications are due March 27, 2023, and are only being accepted from applicants who submitted a concept paper by the Dec. 5, 2022, deadline.

WPTO Adds $10 Million to Proposed Funding Opportunity to Advance Tidal and Current Energy Systems: WPTO announced the addition of a $10 million topic area to a proposed funding opportunity to advance tidal and current energy systems, bringing its total funding to $45 million. With the addition of this topic area, this funding opportunity, expected to be released in early 2023, will advance a comprehensive approach to tidal and current energy development in the United States, ranging from funding community-led planning and project execution to making the first large-scale investment in a tidal research, development, and demonstration site.

DOE Launches C2C Program to Help Communities Meet Their Clean Energy Goals: DOE’s new Clean Energy to Communities (C2C) program connects local government, electric utilities, and community-based organizations with the immense capabilities of DOE’s national lab complex to help them turn their clean energy goals into reality. With three distinct levels of assistance ranging from a few weeks to a few years, C2C helps communities transition to clean energy systems that reflect their local priorities.

Northwest Hydropower Association Annual Conference

Feb. 22–24, 2023, Portland, Oregon

The Northwest Hydropower Association Annual Conference is focused on fostering industry connections and learning about the state of hydropower in the Northwest United States. The theme of the 2023 event is: solutions, which will involve diving into how hydropower can become part of the clean energy future. Come meet WPTO staff at Booth 34! Additionally, the Hydropower Foundation is hosting a Hiring for Hydro event for students interested in joining the hydropower workforce.

CEATI International Hydropower Conference

March 14–15, 2023, Palm Springs, California

CEATI International’s Hydropower Conference will focus on the opportunities and challenges utilities are facing with specific focus on retrofitting dams for extended life, extreme events and the increased need for flexibility, and opportunities for power plant modernization. WPTO will have a presence in the lobby at Booth 007. Come say hello!


Publication of the Month

2022 WPTO Peer Review Report: WPTO released its 2022 Peer Review report, detailing the major takeaways from the office’s latest peer review conducted in July 2022. The purpose of the peer review was to evaluate WPTO-funded projects for their contribution to the mission and goals of the office, to assess progress made against stated objectives, and to assess the office’s overall management and performance. Takeaways from the peer review are used to inform programmatic decision making, enhance active project management, and modify or expand existing projects.
