Upcoming Deadlines

Announcements & Opportunities

A hydropower facility on the edge of a river.

Deadline Nearing to Apply for Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Funding for Hydropower Projects: WPTO is accepting applications for a $14.5 million funding opportunity to further the sustainable development of hydropower and pumped storage hydropower (PSH) technologies. Advancing these technologies will also enable increased deployments of other sources of renewable generation. Full applications are due by 5 p.m. ET on March 6, 2023, and are only being accepted from applicants who submitted a concept paper by the Dec. 1, 2022 deadline.

WPTO Adds $10 Million to Proposed Funding Opportunity to Advance Tidal and Current Energy Systems: WPTO announced an additional $10 million (on top of the previous $35 million) in funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to advance tidal and current energy systems. With the addition of this topic area, this funding opportunity, expected to be released in early 2023, will advance a comprehensive approach to tidal and current energy development in the United States, ranging from funding community-led planning and project execution to making the first large-scale investment in a tidal research, development, and demonstration site.

Apply Now for $4 Million Fish Passage Technology Funding Opportunity: WPTO is accepting applications for a funding opportunity to enhance innovative fish passage and protection technologies. Improvements in technology to help fish move safely through hydropower facilities will help reduce environmental impacts and restore fish population levels. Full applications are due by 5 p.m. ET on March 27, 2023, and are only accepted from applicants who submitted a concept paper by the Dec. 5, 2022 deadline.

Application Deadline Approaching for $10.3 Million Funding Opportunity to Advance Marine Energy Innovation: There is still time to submit a full application for the $10.3 million funding opportunity from WPTO aimed at accelerating the development and testing of marine energy technologies with a focus on wave and ocean current resources. This opportunity will invest in projects that advance wave-powered technology innovation, research, and development for seawater desalination as well as a feasibility assessment for an ocean-current test facility. Full applications are due by 5 p.m. ET on Feb. 24, 2023, and will only be accepted from applicants who submitted a concept paper by the Dec. 2, 2022 deadline.

Deadline Approaching for TCF Laboratory Call: WPTO is partnering with DOE’s Office of Technology Transitions and eight other program offices for this year’s TCF Base Annual Appropriations Laboratory call. Potential topics for funding include a market needs assessment, curation of intellectual property, matchmaking, technology-specific partnerships, streamlining laboratory processes, and increasing external partnerships. The deadline to submit full applications is 3 p.m. ET on March 17, 2023.

Products & Publications

Reflecting on Water Power in 2022: In reflecting on 2022 and looking ahead to 2023, WPTO is sharing a few of the many successes its experts, labs, and partners achieved in the last year to help reach the United States’ clean energy goals. Together with the many other massive efforts underway across DOE, these successes, projects, and people will help build the clean energy future—one invention, village, or data point at a time. Interested in more WPTO successes? Stay tuned for the office’s Fiscal Year 2022 Accomplishments Report, expected to be released in February 2023!

Ripple Effect: Why WPTO Fellow Sarah Moore Believes We Need More Than Math and Science to Solve Problems Like Climate Change: WPTO’s Ripple Effect series features individuals whose impactful work will help advance hydropower and marine energy technologies to achieve a clean energy future. Learn how Sarah Moore, a 2021 American Association for the Advancement of Science Science and Technology Policy fellow in WPTO, uses her engineering (and people) skills to help communities solve their infrastructure challenges.

R&D Deep Dive Webinar: Monitoring Water Quality in Real Time

Jan. 24, 2023, 1–2 p.m. ET, Online

Maintaining and improving water quality has been a long-standing challenge for many hydropower facilities. As new mitigation technologies are developed, researchers need to improve the monitoring technologies to validate that water quality targets are being met. Join the team from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory tackling that challenge with a real-time, autonomous, modular water-quality monitoring system. Learn how they’re enabling improved measurement in challenging locations and what this means for the future.

R&D Deep Dive Webinar: NPD HYDRO Tool Demonstration

Jan. 26, 2023, 1–2 p.m. ET, Online

Join researchers from Idaho National Laboratory and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for a demonstration of their Non-powered Dam Hydropower Development and Ranking Opportunity  (NPD HYDRO) tool. The NPD HYDRO tool allows users to identify and prioritize opportunities for adding power generation and energy storage to existing NPDs. Learn how it could benefit potential users, offer feedback on the tool, and what could come next in this work.
