DOE Awards $2.8 Billion to Supercharge U.S. Manufacturing of Batteries for Electric Vehicles and Grid
DOE announced the first set of projects funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) to expand domestic manufacturing of batteries for electric vehicles and the electrical grid and for materials and components currently imported from other countries. Twenty companies will receive a combined $2.8 billion to build and expand commercial-scale facilities in at least 12 states, and the investment will be matched by recipients to leverage a total of more than $9 billion to boost American production of clean energy technology.

DOE Announces $30 Million to Speed Up Wind Energy Deployment
DOE issued a notice of intent to use $28 million from the BIL to fund research and development projects that will reduce barriers for wind energy projects on land and offshore.
In addition, DOE is requesting information on research needs for the anchors and mooring systems that attach floating offshore wind structures to the sea floor in deep water to shape $2.5 million in future BIL funding. Responses are due by December 19.
DOE released $14 million in funding for research that will improve our understanding of the interaction between solar energy infrastructure and local ecosystems. Through the Deploying Solar with Wildlife and Ecosystem Services Benefits program, researchers will study the interactions of pronghorn, pollinators, birds, and other species with solar energy facilities in 26 states.
DOE announced its intent to issue a funding opportunity that will drive innovation leading to economy-wide decarbonization, increased sustainability, and economic competitiveness. This proposed funding opportunity is expected to include topics that will support DOE priorities to invest in the next-generation materials and manufacturing technologies needed to support manufacturing competitiveness.
DOE announced its intent to provide $35 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to advance tidal and river current energy systems. The potential funding opportunity would support the development of a tidal or river-current site, as well as in-water demonstration of at least one tidal energy system.
Renewable News
DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory published a study that examines future U.S. offshore wind workforce growth and identifies workforce development needs. The report estimates that the offshore wind industry will need on average between 15,000 to 58,000 full-time jobs every year from 2024 to 2030—an increase from less than 1,000 jobs today.
